Do I need a prefilter on BOTH sides of my squirrel cage blower?
    #26915777 - 09/03/20 02:28 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi,

Sorry for the dumb question, but I didn't want to take apart my hood just to answer this question. Squirrel cage blowers only have one side for air intake right? I have a filter only on the totally open side, but have noticed the other side is sucking in air as well. Does this air coming in on the other side end up being sucked into my flowhood too? From what I understand one side is air intake, the other is for cooling, but I'm wondering where this air actually ends up, I don't see anywhere for it to go but into my hood, so I'm starting to think my prefilter has been insufficient this whole time and I've been sucking in dirty air straight to my HEPA.

Basically I'm just copying this right now:

I meant to post this pic before.  This hood is over ten years old and runs 4 to 5 hours daily.  It's still on the original HEPA filter.  I change the prefilter whenever I notice flow decreasing.  With a 24 X 24, you won't want a duct tape job, but you get the point.  Filter the air entering the blower.  Some guys build a box on top which surrounds the blower.  Match a filter to the top as a lid.

Some blowers only suck air from one side, but many will draw from both. It depends on the design. The air drawn in on the motor side is for cooling, but also ends up in your hood. If the motor side of your blower is open to suck air, the best solution is to build a box around the blower and put your pre filter on the box instead of right on the fan.

Just a heads up, make sure you dont build your box to small. Idk what blower you have but many of them will shut off once they get too hot. A small pre filter box can prevent air circulating properly and heat the blower up a lot.

Word. Thanks for mentioning that thought. Building a new hood this week and even though I am working from someone else's design (fresh cap mushrooms) I might tweak it to make the blower housing bigger than called for just to be safe. 🤘

Are you going by their pdf? I used that as my rough guide as well for my hood. Their pre filter box is a great size for my blower. It's pretty dang big. I have a Dayton 1TDU2. I think I saw your blower on another thread and it looked maybe a size up from a 1TDU2. But I used that PDF as a guide and it worked great.

Yeah I couldn't find the blower you got and that those guys mentioned in stock at the time, and the idea of a variable speed blower that achieves laminar flow on the low setting leaving extra capacity to scrub the air in the room quickly was also appealing. Yeah I'll for sure be going with their pdf on this build, thanks for chiming in to further validate my decision to use their design. 🙃 So, what filter did you get to run with that blower?
