It's amazing how gaming has changed in the past few decades
    #26886043 - 08/18/20 04:28 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I'm in my mid-30s.....I've been gaming since the original NES when I was like 5 or 6. The neat thing though, is I've been gaming on the PC since 1995. It blows my MIND how far we've come since 1995. Does anyone else feel like game graphics evolved the most from like 1995 to 2005?

I don't feel like graphics are getting better at the same rate. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely still getting better......I think we are getting diminishing returns though.

I can't WAIT for the day that I can play a game like grand theft auto....and it actually looks like watching a movie. We are SO CLOSE. Some games are getting very photo realistic.

When I can finally play a game like Grand theft auto, with a VR headset, and it looks like real life, AND the map is as big as an actual city...AND each server has thousands of real people in the game....perhaps you can even scan your own body, and use your actual body as an avatar if you wish.....and of course, the AI will be super sophisticated.  That is like a wet dream.

Graphics are overrated. Some of the best games had awful graphics, and some of the worst had great graphics, and games that people thought looked great twenty years ago look like crap now.

I would love to play a GTA game in VR. If the next GTA offers VR support I'd buy VR for my PC or console in a heartbeat.

I agree. It seems like graphics are so good now that actual lifelike visuals are the next step. In a weird way though I kind  of like games like fortnite that have that cartoony look.
I also agree that graphics do not make a game good. I also grew up with nes and even Atari before that. And who can forget about all the arcade games back then.

I played Crysis recently with a graphics mod but still, it's striking how incremental the progress has been since that time when you compare to how quickly things seemed to improve around that period.

I'm not sure if developers hit a wall, or it's just a byproduct of the general quality fixing in the industry whereby all the big developers seem to have made a pact to continually pump-out games with as little effort and expenditure as possible while creating as much hype and profit as possible. As with politics, in general, these days the gaming industry is now more reliant on shill propaganda than it is in actually improving anything.

AI has made fewer strides than graphics even, as has innovation in general, while games themselves have become unchallenging and seemingly designed for children with learning difficulties.

Hopefully, though indy titles (although I don't believe indy games are often as great as people make out) are starting to break the mainstream monopoly, but as long as people keep buying overhyped and underdeveloped crap, companies have no need to really push the envelope.

Trouble is you have a whole generation of players who have never known anything else, and it's difficult to make them see how little effort is being expended to break new ground.

Yeah AI and also PHYSICS! We have all this processing power, it's a waste to dump in graphics when Half-Life 2's physics engine is the high-water mark...and that game is like 15 years old! We could have so much better games with novel gameplay if they'd just focus on making a better physics engine.
