Possible mold on coco casing? can't tell...
    #26915949 - 09/03/20 04:39 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

This is my first ever post on this website, and my first time trying to grow mushrooms. I'm doing the monotub method and i've harvested several mushrooms so far that grew to be huge! i'm letting the rest mature another day (this is my first flush) but i noticed there seems to be a large spot on my coco casing that looks almost like cobwebs. I realized after i started that i didn't need any casing at all, i'm wondering if the coco made it too humid (i'm fanning a few times a day). i know this isn't real cobweb mold but can anyone identify what this is? mold or just mycellium?

It looks like mold to me but it’s hard to say. That casing layer looks very dry and also a little funny. Maybe because I’ve always used verm with my coir idk. Was it just a regular brick of coir?

The coco was a little dry in the pictures, but it has been pretty moist for the most part. I didn't get a brick, i got loose coco in a bag. should i have used brick coco? I'm thinking it's mold because there are no mushrooms growing in that area... is there any remedy i could try?

I’m with roger. I’m pretty sure it’s mold but could be dry myc.

Something is definitely wrong I’ve never seen one fruit with zero surface myc. Did you late case it?

I added the casing after the substrate (boomr bag from northspore) was colonized. i actually followed this northspore tutorial video pretty closely.

I’ve never used the loose coir but as long as it’s not treated with trichoderma it should be fine.

If it is mold then there’s not much you can do. Sometimes you can get a little extra time by cutting out the mold and a good bit of sub surrounding it.

Not too bad advice in that video except the spray painting the tub part. For cubes anyway that’s not doing anything except making it so you can’t see what’s happening on the sides. But then the “casing” part he says 1-2” which is pretty thick. Cubensis don’t need a casing to fruit, except PE will usually blob without a casing, but a 1/4” to 1/2” top layer is good to give you a nice microclimate. Up over an inch and that’s a lot of casing, especially if you’re putting it on later in the process when the myc is wanting to fruit but finds itself buried.

I'll just let it go and see what happens, I wanna do a completely different run with all the info you just gave me in mind. I used much less coir than the video suggested, probably around 1/4". The problem is, i can't see what's going on at all, i have the bottom half of my tub blacked out with coir on top. Definitely things to keep in mind for my next run, i appreciate all the info!

Yeah that’s a ton of coir. I just recently messed around with thicker top layers after the surface was knotted up and it didn’t go well for me either. Very thin and sporadic pinset.

1/4-1/3” right when you spawn is definitely best.
