Oyster mushroom grain spawn
    #26913911 - 09/02/20 02:59 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I ordered some mushroom grain spawn of different varieties of oysters, pink, blue, white, just as an experiment. I want to continue to propagate this on agar. Can I take a colonized grain out of the bag when I spawn and put to agar ?

As far as spawning these to a bulk substrate, can I use aspen wood chips and buckets to fruit these? Will I be successful if I “pasteurized” the wood chips in a cooler with boiling water ?

I would drill holes in these buckets and cover w micropore tape until they are colonized. I need to do more research on fruiting temps of these varieties but I have the space to utilize outside, with shaded areas. What temps are best to fruit them at?

Thank you

Yes, you can take a gran and put to agar that is how everyone does it. Once you have a Petri dish make master slants and you should never have to buy spawn again.

You can certainly self research temps for each species. Just use the search bar on here. Not being a dick it took me awhile to learn just how useful it is too. As for the buckets, you dont need to pasteurize the chips at all if they are coming straight out of a bag. Keep the buckets inside while they colonize, no need for micropore tape either. Oysters are aggressive they will take over the shavings much faster than invaders provided that the spawn is good quality. Your biggest enemy will be insects. Hope you have bug nets ready to go. Beetles and flies home in on colonized buckets FAST, and annihilate your hard work. Good luck 👍

I would suggest forgetting about the buckets and do bags. Buy a 40 lb bag of hardwood fuel pellets about $6 a bag of wheat bran. I am assuming you have a PC.

Oysters should grow on any hardwood as far as I know, never tried aspen myself but don't see why it would be a problem.

If using actual woodchips, it's generally recommended to properly pasteurize.  "Bucket tek" works great but it's really meant for fuel pellets not actual woodchips.

Oysters are very aggressive though, so if you wanna risk it you've got a pretty good chance of it being ok.  Up to you.

I totally agree that pasteurizing wood "chips" is a must. Whether he meant chips or shavings idk, alot of ppl that see bucket teks on youtube call them chips but they are always the shavings. They are super thin and Oyster myc takes them over like wildfire. Unlike actual wood chips that need a bit more time. Ive never pasteruized aspen wood shavings and have never had an issue! Still, obviously doesnt hurt if thats what he wants to do. 😊
