What'd you throw in the bottom? Just a heater and a fan?

Its a 1800w temp adjustable space heater with a pretty decent fan built in. Plugged it in to test it out but blew the breaker 'cause I have 2 dehydrators running on the same circuit. I'll have to wait till they're done to monkey around with it more.

I may put a bathroom fan in the top if it needs more airflow.

This was a cheap way to easily beef up a cheap table top unit that can do way more mush than a regular little dehydro like that. This next run I am going to experiment stacking more than one 5 gallon bucket since it worked so well with one. Half way through the drying cycle I'll put the top bucket on the bottom to even out overall airflow.

I made this to compete with the Cabelas Taj Mahal dehydrator. I built it with mostly stuff I had laying around for about $50 but out of pocket would probably be $100 or so. Once I test temp and dry times, etc I'll post more details. Should fit 10 pounds easy.

I have been wanting to do something like that for a while now

I was thinking I would wait to do it till I had space/a dedicated spot for one. My current ones stows away so nicely when not in use. It also does bulk well so I haven't pulled the trigger on building ones of those beauties, but I just had a thought that I can just use it to store trays of colonizing jars and/or supplies between uses if I design it right so the space savings wouldn't necessarily need to be a hang up ...  :strokebeard:

I let it run for 24 hours usually sometimes a little longer depending on if I am drying late flush monsters and how dense I packed the bucket etc, and yes I get them cracker dry. :hamsterdance:

I actually haven't run it yet.
And the space between the trays isn't huge, but I plan on removing every other tray to double the spacing for the larger fruits. The smaller ones should fit without having to remove any trays.  So if I have to remove 3 trays, I still have 7 usable trays.  Each tray has roughly one square foot of usable space.

Making my SAB now. I dont have anything big enough to press through to make the perfect holes so Im just getting a knife hot and cutting a bit at a time. Real tedious shit. I'll have to sand down the edges afterwards.

Hey, I like to find common things to improvise with, so I try to look at everyday things with an eye towards "what else could that be used for". What I found was surprisingly simple for me.

I wasn't looking forward to making a SAB after the hell I went through making an SGFC. I'll say I appreciated it as a useful learning part in "the path" but I'm not keen on doing it again.

My goal was to find something that was big enough to get my arms through, not so small as to be awkward, nor so large as to allow too much air movement.

I spend a bit of time around restaurants as part of my side work and I found a #10 can worked really well for me. Those are the large tin cans that restaurants use, typically with tomato paste or other bulk food items in them. I grabbed one from one of the cooks, scoured off the labels and any adhesive residue, then ran it through the dishwasher a couple times, and flattened out any sharp edges where the can was opened (optional).

I figured out my hole placement that I wanted, by positioning the holes on the tub to match my shoulder width and visualizing the height I'd like them to be at then placing the can and marking it with a dry erase marker then flipped it over and put it on top of a board so that the wall of the "SAB" was closest to the wood.

I put the can on the larger burner of my electric range for about a minute (you could probably flame the edge of the can as well) and heated it up.

Once I figured it was hot enough, I used oven mitts to grab the can, carefully position it over my marking and press gently till I felt it sink in, then go through the plastic and did a 1/4-1/2 turn twist and pulled away. Viola! If it's hot enough, it'll just sink through and twisting and pulling away was intended to keep it clean and not have hot plastic strands on me.

After that you can sand, grind, melt around the edges so they aren't so rough.

We're all different sized physically, and I'm an average sized guy, but this worked really well for me, was super simple and quickly melted through and was easy to clean up afterwards.

Here's a shot of what it looks like:

I honestly don't know how it was even possible to do transfers before I got my baby up and running, lol. I am getting stainless sides to epoxy to the sides of my work area and a raised stainless platform to bring all my work up to the height of the filter. But a book wrapped in foil is the work platform for now.

Nice!

I'm really wanting to get a Flow Hood setup, but space is an issue. How large is that? 24x12?

12x12 looks like it'd be a bit cramped, 24x24 definitely too large, but can't find any reference to filters or anyone building an 18x12 size, which would probably be ideal for me.

Going from frosty glad cups (which are amazing, thank you Pasty!!!!) to clear petri dishes was literally an eye opener...being able to work with a Flow Hood and not look through a frosty SAB is what I'm thinking of. It helps so much to see clearly.

I wanted the holes in the box to be a bit larger to reduce the piston effect of the air caused by moving around in the box. After working in the box, I think the holes are a bit too large and may be a bit counter productive. I'll probably make another box in the near future and when I do, I'll take your advice and buy a can thats a more appropriate size.

Thanks. Yea its a 12x24, it seems to work well for my purpose another 6" would be nice but I am satisfied working in front of 12x24.
