To let gas/air in and out of the jar while it colonizes without letting contamination in. You need some gas exchange for the jar to progress

Fungi may look sort of like plants, but from a metabolic perspective they are much more like animals. They need to uptake Oxygen and they let out CO2, just like humans

If you don't allow for "gas exchange" then the same thing will happen to the fungus that would happen to a person who is buried alive, they would "suffocate"

Filters are meant to have small holes that allow gas molecules to drift in and out but not be small enough to allow larger structures such as bacterial cells or mold spores

Is there a filter equvilent for bags? Do you need to manually regulate the air or would you put hole in bag and just take more risk with contamination?
