Cacti Identification
    #26913067 - 09/02/20 01:46 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi everyone,
just picked up this sorry cutting which broke off in the wind, the lady who was nice enough to give it to me had no idea what it was other than it's mother plant was over 50 years old.

I'm thinking Peruvian or Bridgesii but I'm still learning when it comes to cacti so I could be completely wrong. Unfortunately it's been sitting up against the fence and looks like it was sitting on the ground for some time so the colour and condition isn't the best.

Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

Looks like a scopulicola - bridgesii hybrid.

The overall shape, especially the tip, the fat ribs and the inwards laying areoles are scopulicola traits, the very long spines are bridgesii charackteristics.

Nice phenotype, I bet it is decently strong (bridge and scop both are very potent).

Thanks mate that is great news, the spines had me thinking Bridgesii.

I trust your ID and really appreciate it. Would love to hear any other opinions just to ease my mind.

I might have to go back and ask to buy a few more, the lady said her parents are still alive and they have the mother plant on their property. 50 years it's been there and before that sat at the back of a factory her father worked at, she said the mother plant is huge. Would love to buy a few cuttings if that's the case.

It's just a guess. That's what it looks like, to me.

IDing plants from pictures is tough.

Still a very nice plant. :sun:

I would agree it's not easy by photos.

But I appreciate the guess, hopefully more people will weigh in.

Thanks Pandemoon

I'm leaning more on the bridgesii side of things.

Nice cactus. Pictures of the mother plant would be awesome.

Thanks for the reply DancingWolf,
that is good news. I'm definately going to ask the lady if here parents (who have the old original plant) are willing to part with any cuttings.

Don't make a pest of yourself. Most people don't like randos coming up asking about plants in their back yard and you might cause the whole plant to get cut down. I would take the generously large gift cutting and grow another tree size Bridgesii with it.

I wouldn't put it like that. It was in lady's front yard for starters, for all to see and secondly her parent's own the mother plant and live miles away it is apparently too big for their yard and they are in their 80's. I don't think asking if they are willing to part with a few cuttings is being a pest.
