Coconut coir BRF CAKE looking like anime/akira
    #26912972 - 09/01/20 11:22 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hello everyone. This has about a week in my FC. This is my first tek ever and even tho it looks cool I'm not sure that is how it should be.
Never saw the pinning phase. Went from mycelium to this.

All advice is welcome.

Schizophyllum commune.  It's another species of fungi that has taken over your cakes.  Not toxic,  but not cubensis.

I'm growing wild cubensis from a spore print I took.

Could it be that something else really took over?

Yup.  As I stated above: Schizophyllum commune is a common contaminant mushroom that occurs most often in the late summer months.  There's an example in the sticky thread "common contaminant mushrooms".

Just chuck it bud.  You won't get any cubes out that.  Without naming a vendor's name,  for reference, you should be able to get a replacement if it was a syringe.  If you can't get one and need a print,  let me know and I'll shoot one your way for free.  If you still have spore solution left you can retry with that first since it likely came from your environment and not the syringe.

I did the spore solution myself so for sure the environment is to blame. How can I avoid this in the future? I have some BRF cakes cooking right now.

Thanks for all the help bud!

You should clean your spores on agar.
Especially if you're using a wild print since they're full of other fungi and bacteria.

Actually, to secure clean spawn one should IMHO always clean the culture on agar with at least 3 transfers.

Tossing sucks, but we all do it.

TETSUOOO! Thanks for posting this. Learned about a new contamination. Schizophyllum. Though since its not harmful could it cohabitate with cubensis and still provide a fruit as long as it hasnt taken over completely?

So weird. Could be a spore mix up and you got oysters, seem that a few times.

I gotta check out this schizophylum stuff.
