Does Choice of Grain Matter?

I'm following Frank's 12 Steps to Shrooms and I chose to buy WBS as instructed. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that my seed contains corn, as well as sunflower seeds (which I've also heard isn't great). I'm thinking of just buying some local grain, probably rye. My question is: Does the choice of grain make a difference to the process, or will I still be following Frank's instructions exactly as written? Thanks.

Usually if you're following a tek to the t then you'll want to follow it exactly how it was written. Like, that's why they wrote it that way. If you treated oats, millet and rye the same then it would be great, but they're all different in the water they retain, the way they cook, etc.

When you rinse the WBS the sunflower seeds should float to the top and you can pour them off. Rinse. Repeat. Etc...
And as you are drying your WBS you can pluck out the corn if you want but its not necessary then follow your TEK.
Actually there are some guys that have been around for quite some time that still leave the sunflower seeds in but most people just pour them off.

For me the cheapest choice is the correct one. Any grain will work great if its properly hydrated and sterilized. Now the question is which is the least expinsive and easiest to handle. I go oats.

I started with Franks no cook WBS tek and did well with some corn and sunflower seeds. Switched to rye eventually and did well also. Tried oats for a while and my success rate dropped considerably so went back to rye. Gave oats another go with a new prep method and likely won't use anything else now that I have it down.
As said above its all about proper prep and sterilization.

I stopped skimming the sunflower seeds out and have always left corn in. It really only becomes an issue if you over hydrate/cook it and even then it just gets sticky but still works fine.
I love wbs it’s easy to use and has a ton of tiny grains for inoculation.

As mentioned above corn and sunflower seeds will not negatively impact your grow but if you have rye available locally you could try that on round 2.
