Got free WBS - Can I turn it into mush?

I'm wondering if this is usable wbs or if I shouldn't waste my time? I got it free from a mate down the way who was moving and was gonna toss it out.

Looks decent to me, no corn, no peanuts, low sunflower seeds. Seems excellent IMO unless there is a ton of broken grain in it.

That's what I use. It's extremely dirty so make sure you wash it about 100 times lol. You'll be surprised how many sunflower seeds are in it! Works great though .....

Skimming them is wasted energy that could be used elsewhere. I like wbf. Rye is king tho.

That’s the stuff right there.
I actually have found it to be way cleaner than the Walmart generic stuff when I do it no prep.

Turns out I really can turn it into mush!! Here are some Burma Cubes exploding off the WBS Honestly it was a bit hard to work with, the small seeds were effortlessly scattering with ease, and the sunflower seeds took bit of work to skim off. That said I had trouble sifting out all the tiny stones as well. Overall I'll stick with Rye, Wheat, or Oat whole grain; But WBS works in a pinch.

I leave the stone things in without any issues. It's there to help the birds digest the seeds, but I notice no difference between leaving it in and removing it. Most of it stays in the bottom anyways when I pour it out to drain.

My germaphobia kicks in just thinking about those stones, they could be possible contamination vectors.

How? Stones are not nutritious, not much is going to eat them. It’s not a good source for any CFU’s that I know of.

A mold spore or bacterial endospore could find refuge among the tiny cracks and crevices of the stones. I know, I'm PCing for 2hrs which usually guarantees I have clean spawn, but I think about these things.

I don’t see how a crack in a piece of grit is going to provide any protection to a mold spore from the heat of the PC. It’s one thing to trip over real vectors but this is not logical thinking.

no more like grit, in between sand and grain size lol notice most of it at the bottom of the bucket I used or the screen when drying

Ok I have noticed it in my jars then, especially towards the end of the bag. I just thought it was like wbs shake.

yeah, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the birds need that stuff in there or it helps with digestion or something

Phobias can be extremely illogical you are correct. Sometimes its a blessing and sometimes its a curse.

Yes it helps them digest the seed they eat. I still don't want it in my wbs spawn though it freaks me out.

Nope they're tiny little stones. If you saw through my eye's you'd see red flags on all the stones. People say they're fine to stay but nope not me, what use are they in the spawn anyhow?

The birds use it in their gizzards, they can’t chew their food the way mammals can generally due to a lack of lips and appropriate teeth. So they eat the grit and it grinds their food for them.

Yeah didn’t dinosaurs do that. And cows maybe.
I can’t even begin to imagine how I’d go about removing those tiny pieces from the seed.

Cows do not have a gizzard. They have a 4 compartment stomach.

Pennington classic is the go to WBS for me. I make it no prep with all seeds, stones, dirt, and twigs intact and myc loves it. I never realized throes Little Rock’s were in there for a reason though, that’s pretty cool

Thought I'd just update this thread real quick with the final pic of this tub. I'm letting this mature for the next few hours and then harvesting.
