How thick should my substrate/spawn layer be?

So I'm slowly getting ready for my first real grow and I found myself 4 tubs laying around the house and planning for a dubtub. They are 11.3 liters and 15cm high. How high should my spawn and substrate be when I add it to the tub?
Another question I have is can I just soak coco coir and put it in a jar, sterilize and use as substrate or are there more intricate stept to the process?

Add spawn to tub, eyeball an equal amount of sub for a 1:1 ratio, mix. I recommend having extra sub to make a casing layer for your tubs; just mix your spawn and sub, level it out, and add a handful of sub on top of that and level.
If you're working with shoeboxes, I really recommend these teks: this one and this one too

I always shoot for a 2.5” thick layer. My holes (monotubs) are drilled with the bottom of the hole right at 3” from the bottom of the tub. I just eyeball 1:1 ratio.
I’ve tried a pseudo-casing via CVG sun sprinkled on top and I’ve tried fully homogenous mix the whole sub.... neither had any benefit over the other IME.
I simply prefer to mix all my sub/spawn then sprinkle a layer of CVG to the 2.5-2.75” mark.
Welcome to sub league.

I get taller fruits and better yields off 4" vs 3".

No more than half as thick as your arm and no less than half as thick as your leg.

All my mono holes are drilled at 3.5 and 4" and aim for the sub to be just below the holes with a top layer. 5qts spawn for a 3.5" hole 56qt mono, 6 qts spawn for 4" hole 56qt mono. Both with a brick of coir + a 1/2qt TL.
