Is that crushed up corn in there? Eesh no wonder it's a mess, maybe your prep isn't the issue...

It's what was available and local when I started, and it worked. I have been doing cubes for a while with this but yes having done some reading it's probably not the best and it is proving difficult with the pans and now this. Not to worry, I've ordered 10kg of wheat and a sack of millet so I'll get it sussed, the culture seems to be recovering nicely from refrigeration so at least i can store it until the new grains arrive. I'm gonna try a soak and simmer for the wheat and then a just soak for the millet. Should be here by next week so I'll update soon

I found wheat pretty easy to work with, soak and simmer and you shouldn't have a problem. Just let 'em steam dry after the simmer and they should be a lot better than what you're working with!

I'm looking forward to it, sadly because it comes with a free bucket 😂 That book on herbal healing beers arrived btw, haven't looked at it yet, another friend suggested his book "The lost language of plants".

Aw that's cool, I haven't even heard of that one! I'm mostly into Buhner reading for his Lyme disease protocols and such. I'll have to check that one out!

This bitch ain't dead yet! Nocc'd up 2 new jars yesterday, just straight wheat. Josex and natedawg helped me fine tune the moisture content before the PC and this morning the myc is leaping of the grains.
Sawdust also arrived arrived, I don't have bran atm but was gonna try using the rinse water from the wheat to hydrate the sawdust and hopefully it'll provided some extra oomph to the sub. I mean what your mainly rinsing off the wheat is bran anyway, right?

No, I don't think bran rinses off with water. Maybe a little nutrition in there though.

Fair, it was something natedawg had mentioned in his wheat prep so I thought it might be worth using. I'll get a pic up soon of the new jars recovering from first shake. I feel my grain prep is a lot better this time so hopefully it won't be too long before I spawn to bulk.

Right, take #2.
I've got two jars colonised,
... and the sawdust is steeping as we speak.
Gonna keep it simple this time. 1 quart grain spawn to 4 quarts sterilised sawdust. Maybe do a verm/peat casing once colonised?

nice.
I tried fruiting Agrocybe aegerita (black poplar mushroom) straight from the block. I got a great pinset, but many fruits ended up aborting or not growing very well.... tobe fair, i kinda put the project to the side.
Ive read Agrocybe aegerita would benefit from a casing layer, and i think that might be true.
so for your case, casing might be a good option too!!

Do you have any ideas as to why they aborted? I'll make up some casing tonight. Think I read that I can freeze it until ready for use, I know I can do that with manure sub.

Agrocybe aegerita does not normally have issues with aborting, or need a casing. I never cased mine, and they grew wonderfully. Actually, I've never cased anything. (not that a casing would hurt, I just don't like adding an unnecessary step personally)
This is the swordbelt strain, uncased:

Although their growth can vary a lot by strain. Here's another strain I didn't like so much... almost like a different mushroom:

Just make sure the pins are well developed before you allow any humidity fluctuations. Dryness is what causes most aborts at the young stage of many mushrooms.

So here's a little monotub.

My spawn broke up really nicely so I'm please with that. I soaked my sawdust for 24hrs, didn't realise I could've just chucked hot water on it for a couple of hours. Oh well. I chose not to supplement as I'm using wheat grain spawn and not LC, also meant I wouldn't have to be awake till midnight sterilising. The sawdust is oak as I couldn't find alder, which other cultist seem to like. I've use a ratio of 1:4 span to sawdust.
Urm, I think that covers it so far. I'll leave the tub sealed until fully colonised.
Forrester - are you saying to leave it sealed until pins are established or should I still introduce a small amount of fae once colonised?

I would leave it sealed until pins are well established, the gas exchange from the lid should be enough.
You can also use a layer of bubble wrap as a faux casing, I think that's what I may have done now that I this picture... (I would still leave the lid on too)

Was it quick to pin?
I read that rivulosa was first ID'd in 05 but since then has spread prolificly through northern Europe and America so I'm hoping it's not a fussy fruiter. It came from a huge patch on a roadside

Well its a shitty pic as there's a lot of condensation lining the tub but the sub is colonising away. Very fluffy growth.
