A grow in 10 pounds bags
    #26900694 - 08/26/20 02:19 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi.

Ive never grown actives in bags, only edibles and I wanted to give it a try.

Today Ive inoculated 2 XL unicorn bags.

The sub is

650gr coir
3 cups worm castings
2200 mL water(the original bucket tek calls for too much water IMO)

Sterilized in a 55 gallons drum

Each inoculated with 3Q of oat spawn in front of the hood.

It takes time to make spawn. Boil the grain, dry the grains, sterilize the grains then lab work to inoculate.I aim to prep less grain. We use a crazy spawn/sub ratio and yeah its needed cause its the bulk of the nutrition in monotubs grow. Tubs are easy and effective I agree, but it call for a load of grains and consequently grain work which I dont have time to do with a full time job and 40 sawdust bags of edibles a week.

But lets says we rise the nutritious content of the sub just like we do with  edibles... Sterilization and the use of grow bags allows it. Food for thoughts.

Shout out to Mudafuka and his Invitro bottles and to tombosley8 for his superb bag grows

baggin with Bosley

The 2 XL bags conlonizing and some smaller ones

The lgt bags in that link are insane.

Idk how he pulled it off that dry though the surface looks like coir right off the block.

They are yeah.

Ive read somewhere on that tombosley gets a quarter pound dry off the XL bags.
and he fits 4 of them in a mono.

At the moment Im pcing 5 standards size bags.

3 bags are

215 gr coir
1 cup worm castings
750 ml water

and 2 bags are

215 gr coir
1 cup soy hull pellets
800 ml water

each of them to receive 1q of spawn

Will post pictures eventually.

I’m curious to how well a mostly coir sub does. The worm castings will supply the missing nitrogen for sure but is there enough cellulose and protein to pull a good flush. I would have added at least some bran to those. However if I had to bet I’d say they probably will do better than most people would expect. I’m going to say 80% BE first flush provided conditions can be maintained.

Im honored to see you in that thread Pasty. !

Im kinda surprise to hear that. Isnt it pretty dogmatic on this forum that coir is great even, equal to hpoo? That coir is used to allow the myc to spread and hold water ? That the bulk of nutrition comes from the grains ?

215 gr of coir is a 1/3 of a brick
which make those bags 3q spawn to a brick, lower than the 4-5 per brick that the OG recipes calls for. Doing some tests to eventually drastically reduce the amount of spawn in subs.

I have some bran on hands. But dont you think that soy hulls pellets are already pretty nutrious ?

I think it’s a misunderstanding, he’s been running gourmets in bags and this is the first run with cubes.

Coir has nutes but not as much as grain or bran does. Soy hulls are great for pleurotus, not sure how they will do with cubes.

Will set the small ones in fruiting mode tomorrow by making a 1 inch hole covered with micropore tape.

You said you're curious about an all coir sub.  Meanwhile I watched donnie brasco last night. Al had some good lines in that movie.

Yes because it’s all coir, no grain products. I don’t really give two shits about manure, I ran those side by sides 4 years ago.

Coir holds a lot of water so if they get the moisture content right I think it could work out.  Not sure how much nutrition is in grains vs coir.

Way more nutrition is available in grains as far as I know.

Running a couple of test sub at the moment. Coir only bucketed and put into bags and others sterilized with added nutrition, coir + worm castings, coir + bran, coir + soy hulls.

Ime bucket tek works 70% of the time which sucks. Partly, I think because Ive been using too much water temperature too high.

If bucket tek only works 70% of the time for you it’s either really shitty quality coir or your spawn is bad.

Oysters and chestnut colonizing nicely.
I aim to go bags only, no more tubs.

Yeah Pasty Im using the regular exo terra thing.

And honestly I dont think its the spawn, working with a flowhood and my lab technique is on point well I think so, my petris are clean I very rarely see any contams landing on plates. Also I dont even lose 1 quart out of a 100 to bacteria or mold, sounds cocky but its true.

:whathesaid:

I’d change the brand of coir if you’re really confident with your spawn prep/inoculations.. a lot of ppl aren’t even boiling with the bucket tek and report better than 70%
