It’s interesting to see the “we just need to get to herd immunity” crowd pivot to “vaccines are too dangerous to take”

We have a vaccine. No need to do that. In a year the only place covid will be circulating is schools. In another year or two after that, the vaccine will be mandatory for all school age children and then covid will be something weirdos get from time to time.
I suspect after your original vaccinations, you’ll need a booster every 5 to 10 years.
When you say “people lose the antibody” you’re referring to naturally acquired immunity. The vaccine will produce much longer lasting immunity.

Yeah, I think you are right. I suspect the covid vaccine will provide much more than a year of immunity for most people
The fact that i havent been as excited as i am to get rhe vaccine in 2 days since like... probably last October, when i met the woman i am in love with... is totally surreal. I would walk a hundred miles to get it. I would stop eating for a week to get it. I would swear off acid for 10 years to get it. Thats how much i dont want to get covid. And i am not afraid because of the media. I am afraid because I watch people die from it firsthand. I have seen as many or maybe slightly more people die from covid since april as i did from all causes combined in the previous 8 months. And i have seen a lot of people who didnt die end up with permanent damage to their bodies. Not all of them were old or fat. I could never have envisioned this scenario. I guess i could have, given my field, but i didnt

If the first shot provides decent immunity, I would suspect most people will feel somewhat sick after the second shot.

Morrowasted, as right as you are, please keep in mind that you are seeing the worst of a large population that is far more infected than advertized.
But absolutely, I'd do the Dufresne shawshank shit tunnel crawl for a vaccin today.
You could literally police taser me in the ass, with the skin penetrating prongs, if it got me a vaccine today.
People who refuse the vaccine are out of their minds, thats the nicest way to put it because its also rather antisocial to your social circle.

yeah I'm aware that I'm seeing the worst of it and the likelihood of me getting extremely sick and/or dying is probably very low (albeit much higher than my likelihood of catching covid if covid did not exist...), but this gamble is a no-brainer to me. I'm just pulling these numbers out of my ass and experience-based intuition, but let's sake for the sake of speculating that my chance of dying from covid- as a 31 year old normal weight male with a former 12-year smoking habit- is 1 in 1000. That's 0.1% chance of dying. Seems pretty low. Let's say my chance of developing permanent heart, lung, or liver damage is 1 in 100. That's a 1% chance of permanent complications.
Now, let's say my chances of dying from the vaccine are 1 in 3,000,000 (they have to be greater than the number of currently vaccinated people, since so far 0 deaths have occurred because of the vaccination. That is a .0000003% chance of dying. Let's say my chance of developing permanent complications of the vaccine are 1 in 100,000 (this is a highly generous estimate for you given the current data). That is a 0.00001% chance of developing permanent complications. Additionally, if the vaccine turns out to be 98% effective at preventing death (not transmission) from covid after all the data comes in, then- I can't do the math on this- but my chance of dying from covid has just dropped dramatically from 0.1%.
Even if these numbers aren't accurate, the accurate figures will turn out to be some approximation of them, because they always do, and we have enough data by now to know if they weren't going to. Doctors and scientists are aware that vaccines have risks. I'm aware. The reason that doctors and scientists don't go out of their way to increase awareness of these risks is that most people are truly awful at risk assessment. One example of this is that many people develop phobias of things like flying despite the fact that they drive 2 hours a day. Their fear of flying is irrational. In the same way, fear of the vaccine is irrational. If you're an immunocompromised person, or possibly pregnant, or a person with a history of serious reactions to vaccines or other medicines, by all means, PLEASE TELL US. We want you to live- THAT'S WHY WE WANT YOU TO GET THE VACCINE. If you DON'T have these conditions, then a failure to go get vaccinated AS SOON AS POSSIBLE can ONLY result from a lack of medical/biology-related education and/or poor risk-assessment ability.
Check out this book to learn exactly how your brain tricks you into being really bad doing intuitive statistics:

Not many books have changed my life significantly, but this one did.

Thanks for the book suggestion, and I'm of course completely on your side and by no means want to argue against the seriousness of COVID or overstate the probably very low risks of the vaccine in comparison, just empathically reminding you that you are a bit shellshocked by all the horrible things you have seen in the front lines of fighting this.
December 23 is your day.

I was offered the vaccine because I work in healthcare, but did not take it this time. Call me crazy, but that was my choice. I don't feel like I am a high risk person. I am more likely to catch it from being out in public than from a patient. So, there will be one more vaccine available for someone who is much more at risk than I am. I'm sure the vaccine will be widely available this time next year and I may consider it. Until then, I'm not sure.

Unbelievable. People like you should have to pay any healthcare costs out of pocket and go to the back of the line for services.
What a fucking disgrace
