Pfizer says its vaccine has a 90% efficacy rate with no serious adverse reactions in the tens of thousands of volunteers in its trials. They’re expecting FDA authorization by the end of the month

Only 9 people out of 22,000 participants who received the active vaccine have been infected. No serious adverse reactions.
They said 50 million doses will be ready by the end of December - two doses per person.
This is a joint vaccine developed in Germany and the US, and they didn’t receive funding from trumps vaccine development operations... so Americans will not be getting all those doses.

90% is extremely good for a vaccine.
The flu vaccine has ranged from 10-60% effective over the past 15 years, with an average around 40%, based on data from the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/past-seasons-estimates.html
The bigger issues with the pfizer vaccine are distribution since it requires two doses and has to be stored at -80 C. And it's still unclear how long antibodies last since no study I've seen has looked past 6 months, which of course makes sense because we only saw it emerge less than a year ago. But Covid will inevitably mutate to evade vaccine-induced immunity anyway so we'll need new vaccines.

I'm really excited about the vaccine. Canadian government pre ordered with several companies including Pfizer. My boss told me anyone in the office who doesn't get it will be fired, even if that isn't legal they just say on paper it was for some mistake you made. I hope it's mandatory to show proof of vaccination for everything, I should have the right not to shit next to a bug spreader on a plane. Vaccines are awesome! When I went to the clinic they were like you want a free hep vaccine? I was like sure!

It means 90% of people who get the vaccine will not get infected with COVID-19.
I honestly don't believe the real figure will be quite that high, but it's possible. I understand that coronaviruses are a lot more stable than the flu, and low flu shot efficacy is due to faulty predictions about which strains will be prevalent.

From what I understand there were about 22,000 subjects who received the vaccine and 22,000 controls. 94 subjects so far have gotten covid. 9 received the vaccine and the other 85 were controls.

^ That's why it took so long for pfizer to get the recent data. In their ongoing trial of 44,000 people, they only have 94 have confirmed cases thus far, so that's the data set they just reported. Of those 94 people that tested positive, 90% of them were in the placebo group.
That's one potential silver lining of the recent covid surge -- they got somewhat stronger data because they had a larger set of positive participants for analysis.

The sample size is very large. We can assume the behavior of both groups is the same.
