American deaths are not yet in the millions, so, getting. It can get much much worse, viz Wuhan and Italy.
By the way, my African social media friends from several diverse nations tell me the Covid situation is very bad there, much worse than the data suggests - as you would expect.
Lots and lots of deaths.
If you have areas where there is 1 doctor for 50,000 people over a vast terrain, who each make lets say $50 a month.. You can imagine the lethality.

My best friend had an engagement party last night. I initially told him I wouldn't be able to make it because I was being careful, but decided that as long as a wore a mask and stayed outside the whole time and kept a distance from people I'd be fine.
I was sorely disappointed in everyone's behavior. It was literally like there was no pandemic at all. One other person wore a mask. That's it. That's the level of protection people are taking. Getting drunk, hugging, laughing into each other's faces, gathering 15 people together in a room with no masks.
It sucks. I left early after trying my best to stay at least 6ft away from everyone outside and having to constantly shift away from people.
It's like I'M the crazy one.

I'm working as an essential worker in a massive factory, and everybody is constantly all up in everybody else's face, and last time I tried to flex social distancing on people coming into my space, I had my job threatened. So yeah, I can feel that.

I’ve skipped 2 funerals and a wedding (that I otherwise would have been the best man at) because I knew the people there wouldn’t be wearing masks or keeping distance. At first my wife was trying to convince me that it’d be fine and people would be smart, of course after the fact I’d ask someone about it and they’d say that not one person was wearing a mask and everyone was huddled together. I was living with someone going through chemo at the time... fuck that. Both funerals were COVID deaths too  . What the fuck is wrong with people

One friend I talked to just straight up doesn't think it's a big deal. And compared to a lot of other pandemics, numbers-wise, it's not. But like...we should be trying to keep it like that. He thinks it's highly exaggerated by the media to be a power/money grab by politicians and the ultra-rich, which is also kinda true...but IT'S STILL A PANDEMIC.
Basically my other friend who was there was downplaying it, saying it's not that big a deal, and that Type O+ people are immune (I corrected him, they are just less likely to get it from what it seems like) but everything I say falls on sympathetic, yet inactive ears.
"Yeah, it's not great, yeah, we could be doing better..." Then they get uncomfortable and change the topic.

That's the thing though, I understand where they are coming from. Next thing you know there will be certain hours or days you can shop, curfews, etc. Oh wait, that exists. It's a scary thing to realize that there is a curfew in your city and that you can't go outside at certain times.
I know it's for the best, but "that's how it always starts" isn't really inaccurate.
I just wish people would voluntarily do this stuff so it wouldn't have to be mandated. There will always be 99% less pushback over things that were "our idea" in the first place, not a government restriction.

I agree. Also, the government doesn't like to relinquish power. Give them an inch, maybe they won't take a mile, maybe they will. But it's hard to imagine them giving the inch back, if that makes any sense.
