First gymns of the season, never found them this early, usually have to wait till at least October. Very happy to see them, must have been because of all the rain we're getting!

I'm starting to think there's something a little bit odd about these. They've never grown from hardwood near me, which is the habitat for G. luteus. They always grow terrestrially near Quercus spp., and always have "stipes that are joined at the base and arise from a common,
thick-fleshed, obconic or root-like tissue buried in soil," which is from the description of Gymnopilus orientispectabilis. I'm wondering if it's actually another species, or if G. luteus is just extremely variable in its growth habits. It wouldn't be the first time an organism from East Asia migrated to the east coast...

They do look like Gym. luteus except for the partial veil,  it looks to membranous to me. You can send me a spore print and I can measure the spores to see which section it's in. and then go from there.

Gymnopilus is variable and why it is difficult to identify to species level without microscopy. Sometimes the clade is as close as you can get.

So these were growing directly from wood? is it a living tree, fallen woob, stump, etc?

No, these were growing from out of the ground near the base of a live oak tree with a thick root-like base, I'll definitely take a spore print when I can!
