keep seeing that BRF is inferior?
    #2690400 - 05/17/04 07:38 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Why do you think brf is inferior to whole grains? I thought it looked like a good easy tek for a beginner? Is it mostly recommended for beginners? Since my friend is going to innoculate today do you think she ought to ditch the BRF and go with the wild birdseed flour that I saw people posting about yesterday? Thanks for any and all opinions.

not for its intended use... BRF is steamable where as you need a pressure cooker to effectivly sterilize whole grains

the way i see it, and im still a newbie when it comes to cultivation, is that grains are easier to use. my first try was brf cakes ala the pf tek but since ive tried grains i doubt id go back to cakes anytime soon. id say stick with the brf if its right in front of you but give grains a go next time. so in summary, i dont know why brf cakes are recommended to the begginers because in my experience grains are alot easier and faster.

K- but the brf tek I read recommends using a pc....so at first I told her to do that. My friend has a little pc and is making her cakes today, should I tell her to change substrates to something else? We are confused! I thought the BRF was a good option but just wanted to make sure before my friend proceeds. Sorry if this is redundant. I appreciate your help!

Well it wouldn't be hard for her to go and get some grains- she is going to run errands anyway and has some time today- she just wants to do it right the first time.

If this is her first time ,I would stay with brf. That way she can get the hang of cultivating. Then after she has one grow under her belt,I would definately switch to grains,I think they are easier, but, not for a first grow.
So use what you have to get a grow going then make up some WBS (or any other grain)jars on your next run. That way you have knowledge of growing them both.

have her make a few of each... if she has a PC at her disposal she can do either, BRF is fine if its steamed or PC'd

she doesnt need to grind it... just soak it for about 8-12 hours, drain for 30-45 minutes, fill some jars and PC for about 1 1/2 hours (assuming its a small home type of PC)

Dont forget to simmer the wbs for 30 minutes prior to pc'ing.
It helps with the water content IME

And rinse it thouroughly!

I dont simmer,I just soak for 24 hours, and then drain and my water content is fine. Its really a matter of what works for you, simmering or soaking, both work well, but different people have different results each way.You wont know untill you try.Its really all a matter of personal opinion.

But BRF will work fine for your first grow.

My Roosters first attempt at WBS with a simmer included!

Cool. Thank you all SO much. I think she will try both rye and brf. Just another question though, WHAT is inferior about brf? Is it not enough food for the myc or something? Thanks again for all your help, everyone!

It is just easier for the beginner than grains.Brf or any organic grain flour produces some really good yeilds, but if you want bigger and better yeilds then go with grains.Brf works great also,it just doesnt produce as well as grains.

IMO

Are you referring to my thread i started on WBS Flour instead of BRF . If this is the case and you already have brf go with that. This experiment is still kind of new, it just a great alternative for people who can not locate brf and still want to stick with the pf tek recipe. This is just some thing i tried not that i will be using it exclusive, as nothing in my opinion can replace straight grains

In PF tek , substrate is made with brf+verm+water .
Nutrients come only from brf .
The grain tek use only grain and water .
Nutrients come only from grain .

In theory, a jar 3/4 full of grains content more nutrients than a jar full of PF substrate .
And in practice ,wbs cased produce more fruits than PF cake ...

That's exactly how I found it. What a lot of work cakes are, all that mixing and 4 times the inoculation shoots ....pfft.
