Anyone run into this with their flow hood wood?

So I was lumber shopping while waiting for my filter to come and I and both Home Depot and Lowe’s have 23/32 and not true 3/4 plywood. The only true 3/4 plywood is their fancy shit that is $54 a plank and my box doesn’t need birch wood lol. I was going to try going to an actual lumber yard, I just found it odd because 3/4” ply seemed pretty standard to me. I was going to get my wood cut but my calculations got all jacked up with their widths and they had some nice sanded pine for $32 but again, not true 3/4”. If anyone came across this how’d you handle it? I figured try all my contractor lumber yards as I bet they have plenty of true 3/4” ply kicking around. Now question will be will they be able to cut it for me lol. I really don’t want to have to buy a table saw.

Most plywood is not true 3/4. Builder grades are sold by /32 and are always about 1/32 less than nominal. Even cabinet grade sanded and birch are likely under 3/4” even if listed as 3/4.

Plywood is heavy. MDF is way lighter.

23/32 is .718 of an inch and 3/4 is .75 so its .032 of an inch smaller wich is exactly a 1/32 not sure if this helps u at all but i work in converted decimals of fractions all the time and just have the whole table in memory lol

Gotcha, so I’m just going to basically design it in converted decimals. My concern is will they be able to cut it like that for me at a Home Depot etc. I think best idea is just design it in cad first, lots of experience in cad design and especially in sketchup.

If you’re having HD cut your wood, it really doesn’t matter. I worked the lumber department, and when we cut we’re lucky if we’re within an 1/8” of your measurements. Our panel saw is not a precision piece of equipment. At least not after it’s been run into with the forklift a dozen times.

Pretty sure that’s backwards. MDF is heavy stuff.

So what your saying, rent a table saw and do it myself to get the precision I want? I know how to use all the equipment, I just don’t have $1000 to drop after spending as much as I have on supplies lol. But for $50 for a day, I could rent a table saw lol. I am going to go to some lumber yards today. I know it’s silly but I would love to have a nice cherry wood.

No, i'm correct. MDF stands for "medium density fiberboard" its what they make speaker encloseures out of....
MDF is lighter than plywood

For cutting down a full sheet I wouldn’t rent a table saw. Saw board and a good circular saw will be much easier.

I've got an old, I mean like 40 year old Craftsman top of the line back then, and it still works better than any saw I've used today. Don't make them like they used to. I will need to look up what you mean by saw board however, some terms I am not familiar with. TIme to google.
Edit: Got it figured out, so basically get a 4x1 8' long, get an aluminum U shape piece, screw it in level for straight cut. Then get rolling things like they use on doors which I can attach to the saw, gives me a perfect cut. Just need to make some A stands. I'm still going to see if I can get a lumber yard that has a good cutter to do it haha. If not I'll go full DIY with it.

If you want to have someone else cut your wood, and want it done nicely, call local cabinet shops. They will have panel saws, or table saws with large enough sleds to cut big sheets accurately. They also have the best quality plywood.
I made my sawboard from some scrap 1/4 plywood I had lying around. Twenty years later it’s still the best tool for breaking down sheets of ply.

Gotcha I will check that out, the more I’m looking at it I’m thinking of doing the saw board, it’s simple and you can get some damn accurate cuts. But I will def check out some cabinet shops. I seriously won’t mind paying a few bucks to have them cut it for me. Hell, when I get the filter in I can go to them and say “here, I need you to build a “cabinet” that will fit around this filter with a 12” air gap behind it. Oh and on the top I need a hole cut for this blower which I have right here. They could probably make me a very nice box only thing I need to paint the interior with this:
Some new stuff I found at Home Depot, should be a really good product for the interior. Then I have a nice stain for the exterior. I know it doesn’t need to look anything nice but again I have nothing to do for 6 weeks so why not?
