Digital meat thermometer with alarm for cooling water bath

I found this thermometer on eBay. It's a meat thermometer with a probe and it lets you set an alarm for when the food reaches a specific temperature. I thought it could save me some time when I make a water bath to cool the agar, but I'm not sure if the thermometer will only beep at a specific temperature or at any temperature above it. Has anyone ever tried this?

Never tried it. I wait 2 hours then pour it, its still warm but you can handle it with a pair of nitrile gloves

My Petris seal completely, if I pour even a couple of degrees above the usual temperature I get visibly more condensation on the top ones, which I later have to go out of my way to remove. Pouring at exactly the right temperature saves me a lot of time, but I have to keep checking on the thermometer

I use a 17 dollar sous vide in a plastic bin. Water filled up to agar level, temp set at 117 F. As soon as I can open the pressure cooker I move the media bottle to the bath. Then I can leave it for hours till I'm ready to pour, and its perfect every time. Super simple.

I use a very similar meat thermometer...I just never use the alarm for my agar water bath. Not sure how the alarm will save you time though... I just check on mine every few minutes until it's pouring temp.

I didn't even know such a think existed, that's so cool. Here they go for upwards of €100, maybe I'll get one in the future. Does the food really taste that much better?

Just the minute it takes me to go to the kitchen, but it's so cheap that I thought why not. If you try the alarm let me know if you find out if this works

Look on ebay or amazon for deals. I've never actually cooked with mine, but I can see its usefulness. Its perfect for pouring agar though.

I did, for the circulating unit alone you can't find anything below €70. Still cheaper than a laboratory water bath, but too expensive seeing as if I don't really need it :/
