Sorry, I was sent this and have not done any work on it myself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

That's strange. It looks like a bunch of stones or something. Did a friend give this to you or did you order a plate?

If those clumps are primordia on a very overgrown agar plate, then yeah I think it'd be possible to save w/ some transfers
But if it's anything else, I'd say toss that cottage cheese looking thing. It's hard to tell, but maybe someone with more experience could identify it

Looks like myc on a germ plate.
Definitely workable, spore plates are rarely super clean. I’d take a tiny wedge from a good lookimg section and see how it grows out. If it looks bacterial then you’ll have to take steps to fix it but I think there’s a good chance it cleans up ok.

It came free with some syringes. That's why I have just ended up here. I do want to get into ager eventually but I don't have the supplies to transfer into other dishes and have just ended up with one.

its very educational to work with a dirty agar plate. consider the travel time and feasible temperatures - it may have gotten a long time to grow, already being somewhat grown out when it began transportation
since you have syringes and this available, i would use those to work on getting clean, beautiful growth on a dish or agar jar.
wrap it in a ziplock and put it in the refrigerator, ideally such a overgrown plate should have been used way earlier, and further delay in grow temperatures may not be super good either
get started on agar soon, its way less intimdating than you think, and its a core skill in the hobby and your most important tool for getting clean growth
its also entirely possible that your syringes are dirty, and transfering a few dishes from that agar dish may be your best course of action with what you have

What would you recommend as the best course of action to clean it up?
I was going to take some slices and transfer to grain and hope for the best.

Pasty plates or just a basic agar recipe. Usually a 1.5-2% solution of agar/ nutrients. I use 500mL 7.5g agar 7.5g light malt extract.
Like homie said, agar is gonna be important and it really isn't that daunting. Once you have the agar and light malt extract (or any other nutrient source you find on here) decide how you want to go pre-pour or post-pour, in reference to the pressure cooking step. Pre-pour is something for a tek like pasty plates. You pour the agar into ziplock mini rounds, pc them and let them cool. The other method has you pc the agar then pour plates inside a sab.
That should be enough to at least get ya researching

Best course of action is to transfer from that plate to new plates, preferably at least 6-10 plates. If you dont wanna get petris, just get agar powder and malt, which is cheap.
A teaspoon of malt extract, 500 ml water, 5 grams of agar Mixed together Heat it up till its one mass Pour a small amount into your 6-10 jars Sterilize the agar jars in your PC for 20 minutes with lids not tight Open PC, tighten lids Transfer a small part of that plate to the new agar jars Wait a week Take a look at the growth, if it looks good, take to grains or make new transfers
Once you have something that looks beautiful and organized, make a transfer to good moisture content grains, that way you will have good results
If you still want to take shortcuts, and take that overgrown plate to grains, at least do agar work side by side, by making some new plate transfers when u are opening that dish first time, saving the culture

OK, I think you're right. This might be a great opportunity to get stuck into agar work and progress!
Thanks for the advice and encouragement
I don't have a PC. Is there a good non-PC tek anyone suggest I try? I'm still getting started so I'm sure a PC will be mine one day, just not soon.
I've seen microwaves being used. I'm dubious.

You can try to steam sterilize them but I wouldn't know how long to do it. If you have a few empty soup cans, a big pot and some ingenuity you can probably get it figured out. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I would recommend looking up how to steam sterilize

get a pc asap, and completely give up steam sterilization, microvaves, uv sterilization, aliens and ufos
get into the core methodology using the most assured tools
go look in the mirror, what do you want to be?
