Can you go without watching television WHATSOEVER for an entire week? Month? * 1
    #26903878 - 08/28/20 10:28 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

So based off of all the reactions I’ve ever gotten when I tell people that I don’t have cable or Internet (WiFi in house) ; it seems that I am in the overwhelming minority on this issue.  I figured the Shroomery would level the playing field a bit in regards to the amount of pro television responses.  So how about it, can you go an entire week without watching ANYTHING? What about two weeks?

Myself personally I own a TV but only watch things maybe once a week.  I will put it on as background very rarely but I need to use a bit of the data from my phone and tether the TV to my phones connection to stream so I try not to waste it as it’s extremely useful depending on the situation, for much more than just entertainment.

When my mom found out I haven’t had cable in years she tried to pay for cable thinking that I didn’t have it because of the expense.  It took me almost a week to convince her I genuinely dislike 99 % of all shows on it.

I haven't had any cable TV service for over 15 years and for about 5 of those first years, no internet service.  While I do currently stream movies and only a few of my favorite older TV shows, I still prefer popping in DVD movies.  I kicks it old school.

hmm, interesting. I do watch a lot of TV and a lot of BS as well, but not talk shows or series. I really only watch the ghost shows (mate loves these), and some of the horror/suspense, sci fi series and stuff like that. Movies are my favorite thing about having cable. Interesting that the younger people do not like TV as much. I'm thinking because they have grown up with comps and have a screen in their faces almost the whole time they're awake, so no need or want for TV in general. If you grew up with a 19 in BW tv and no remote with tinfoil for an antenna, you might think about it a bit differently, lol. I also MUST mute commercials, I absolutely despise commercials!

I love the internet and would get uncomfortable without it unless I had a lot of activity to occupy my attention.

There is zero appeal in cable tv, that shit is ridiculously basic, mindless and disgusting.
The idea of needing a laugh track for a tv show, gtfo.  I do use Netflix and prime sometimes but there pretty meh

Could one consider YouTube television

That’s my main fix for digital entertainment

It would suck going without YouTube, I love checking out new content and getting new vids from my favorite channels. Most of my time on YouTube is listening to stuff while I am at work though, it kills time and murders boredom. YouTube as a company, they can go fuck themselves but finding quality content to suit any interest is really appealing.

I could go awhile without YT but it would suck

Yeah, i can go long periods of time without TV, mostly because I use the Internet so much and play video games. I definitely think about since I have some favorite shows that I think about like Kindred Spirit, Ghost Adventures, Ancient Aliens, The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch, random movies...

I watch TV probably a few times a month, i do "watch" a lot of Music Choice, which are music channels with random facts thrown on the screen. Not sure that actually counts thou :awehigh:

Easy, books. I prefer reading over watching anyhow.  Given enough high quality books in my genres I enjoy TV  would be obsolete.

I'm more in to games when I use my tv. I really only watch shows and movies when I'm really bored or if there's something genuinely good to watch with the wife. After a long day of the kids there's not a lot to do together but veg out but I'm not big on rewatching stuff either. I'm always trying to find something new. I've definitely gone weeks maybe a month or so without watching any shows or movies, but YouTube is my main source of entertainment. I've gone just as long without it, I regularly take long breaks from it just because it gets monotonous if you don't know what to look for. If I didn't like video games, the library that is the internet, and occasionally talking to you fags I could live without a tv. You couldn't pay me to install cable/satellite.

I haven't watched any TV for over 10 years now.

I haven't been to the movie theater in 13 years.

I haven't played video games in 15 years.

TV feels like a waste of time to me, nothing interesting at all and I can't stand just sitting around doing nothing & starring into a TV screen. The majority of movies are predictable cookie-cutter crap, there's rarely anything novel or interesting.

There are a few channels on youtube that I watch time to time, I might watch one or two things on youtube around and after dinner and that's about it.

I have no prob going with out.....Though I do prefer having an internet connection just because of all the information at my finger tips, anytime I get a random thought or think about something I'm not sure of or need to learn about something I can learn about it with a quick search, and being able to stream music is nice (I don't listen to the radio).

Book 2 Wise Man's Fear was only so so, and he is taking a GRR martinesque amount of time to write the third book.

They are, though I believe the quality of the material suffered drastically after he got ill and eventually Sanderson stepped in to finish which I haven't read but heard is not bad.

I've paused the series after book 8, still have 7 more to go and the final 3 are by Sanderson, which I've heard are really good ones. So far after book 8, I still really like the series but maybe it diminishes right before Sanderson took over. With it being such a long series, I imagine the TV show could be quite a long run too

I haven't watched broadcast television in more than 30 years, not since I was a child.

I bought a TV and a stand alone media centre about 5 years ago which I play documentaries and films on. I have a PS4 since about a year and a half ago. I occasionally like challenging and engaging games, massive worlds with in depth stories are the go. But mostly it just gathers dust.

I get quickly bored with it all, go and read books or mess with my plants or musical instruments.

The books by Sanderson are awesome

As the series progressed he kept introducing new characters it drove me crazy.

Back on topic:

We have a TV with cable but only because somehow there is a free signal in our appartment. Once this gets shut down we will get rid of the TV entirely.
I do occasionally watch a movie or series on netflix but lately I have been getting back into my reading

The kids watch netflix and youtube as well. Max 30 minutes a day screentime for them during schooldays. Bit longer during holidays

Personally I feel TV-shows and whatnot are pure brain poison

I said "fuck it" and unplugged the TV cable from my bigscreen TV, "I'll plug it back in when I want to really watch the idiot box."

That was in May.

2019.

I haven't looked back.

Side effect: its like invasion of the bodysnatchers, the people all over you show rage and neurosis to subjects which just aren't that important, all insisting on the exact same buzz words and buzz phrases that upset them so.

And they exchange these soundbytes between them and get more upset and its either fucking about nothing or something so far-fetched and fetishized like finding it impossible to condone that Moslim ladies wear their head scarfs, or how this or that politician said so and so that, completely beside the point, alludes to ill repute.

When the US and Russia have a limited nuclear exchange over Russian sub sunken by the US navy I'll plug in and watch the fireworks.

But for the rest?

No thanks.

It brainwashes you into fear, anger, frustration and unhappiness that lights up your alarm pathways of the brain so that you keep tuning in because your brain cant help but insist its as important as smoked methamphetamine shards.

Commercials instill an unfulfillment in you that can be relieved by buying their product.
The news says Good Evening, then tells you why it isn't in such a way that it won't ever be.

No. That's an easy one. I'm nearly bed bound and it's one the only ways to escape that pain and the mental problems. I want to be able to do things. I used to before the aaccident even before they cut me off my muscle relaxers. I used to be able to go on several week trips across the country now I'm lucky if I can sit up all day.

I could easily go without.  It's totally common for me to have a busy work week and not watch a minute of TV.

With that said, I enjoy movies particularly.  I have a super high end home theater so I can easily watch 2-3 movies on the weekend.

I'm honestly not surprised so many people who have taken pshycidelics have turned away from TV. I haven't owned a TV ever in my adult life. My room mate has one and I am amazed how terrible shit now a days is. And the ads sweet christ what an annoyance. Even YouTube is getting too ad heavy its just not enjoyable for background music anymore.

I haven't watched television programming since I was 15 or 16 when Daily Show with Jon Stewart was on. After that I streamed Breaking Bad. Since then, no TV.

Y'all are making No Fap challenge threads.

FAP and make No TV challenge threads. They will be compelling as the participants are one by one coming out of the hypnosis and realize they live in a country of remote controlled drones having the darnedest opinions on the most beside-the-point issues while the actual biggest problems in the nation are unaddressed.

There is more to gain from No TV than from No Fap.

Was going to post TV Party by Black Flag but every upload on YouTube had an ad for car insurance. Not very punk rock. YouTube and TV go can suck a lifetime supply of ad revenue dick.

It wasn't that long ago YouTube had no ads. And Netflix came in the mail. What happened?

I haven't had a tv in at least 5 years, so yeah I can definitely go a week. There's 0 benefit to your life in watching TV.

You know what happens when you get rid of TV? Nothing. You just find other shit to do.

Without any videos including internet?  Hell no!  I mean, if there was some decent motivation to do it, and I was allowed podcasts, then, maybe, yes.  Haha.  It's, at least, a majority of educational and non-fictional material that I am usually consuming!

I have NoScript and AdBlock Plus plugins installed on my computer browser, YouTube doesn't play ads.

Phone just spews ads though if I try and watch anything. Evil.
