I forgot to say that I also used 1/4 brown rice flour. If 1/4 water isn't enough, why does the Magic Mushroom Growers Guide say it is?

you are using 1 pint jars.... those ingredents are for 1/2 pint jars

OK, I forgot to say that I DID double the receipe, i. e. 2 X 2/3 vermiculite, 2 X 1/4 water, and 2 X 1/4 brown rice flour. The jars are filled nearly to the top, the top layer being dry vermiculite.

My guess is that you have packed the substrate too tightly into the jars
