Someone told me you could use the microwave to sterlize substrate and avoid buying a pressure cooker completely? anyone use this method, is it adequate?

Yeah, i've done it twice with a tupperware version of the PF style cake. If my camera was good enough i'd post pics of the mushrooms growing off of it... I would still suggest a PC however, even though i don't have one. The true myc-heads on this site seem to swear by them, and I'm not one to argue

I've done it a few times with mixed results if you are going to do it add slightly more water and microwave more then once. times depend on your microwave, and I think bacteria need prolonged heat to kill them any time I have had problems with the microwave it has been bacterial contams.

Yep some bacteria generate spores that are a bit like some fungal spores, ie pretty resistant to desication/ killing etc so the experiences of that guy above make sense... even if you knock of the bacteria, some spores may remain and bacteria could regenerate from them... if you have it on long enough/ hot enough though, in theory a microwave should sterilise almost anything... I use the microwave to sterlise paper {*subsequent edit, see next post*} before making a sporeprint, but based on other threads here I'd guess a pressure cooker is optimal for the wet stuff... (and purdy cheap 2nd hand... just gotta be careful not to open them while there's still pressure there!)

Quick addition... paper in the microwave should be watched the whole time!! if it starts smokin' it's been in there too long... IT WILL catch fire if you leave it unattended on high...

I also had mixed results when working with substrate and i don't recommend it for that purpose. Fractional sterilization is better than microwaving if you don't have a PC IMHO. On the other hand, i had great results with microwaving when sterilizing casing layers like 50/50 and others.
