Experts needed! Help a newb out!

Hello
After months of lurking and studying I just had a few questions
1: How many grams of grain spawn are in a fully hydrated and pressure cooked quart jar? (on average? I understand different types of grain will have a slight difference in weight)
2: What should a new grower be looking for on CVG bulk surface conditions in a large mono tub? In regards to knowing if the FAE is right and surface hydration is right? How does one know when to mist or adjust air intake etc?
3: What are your average times in days from spawning a large bulk mono to seeing Pins? Some people say 7 days some say 28 days What would the average be?
4: What is your recommended grams/lbs of WBS to spawn in a CVG 50-60L mono tub for max dry weight? skys the limit. Is there such a thing as to much grain if you keep the total depth under 4 inches with both spawn and bulk? Will 1:1 always produce more than 1:2, 1:3 etc?
Thank you for any future help

1. Never weighed it. Why? Can’t think of any reason you’d have to know.
2. Learning proper sub conditions takes more than an explanation. You have to see it a few times, use the search engine and there are several guides on this.
3. 7 + 28 = 35 / 2 = 17.5 days. That’s a pretty good average in my experience
4. Common in a 54 or 66qt tub is 4-5 quarts of spawn - again not sure of the weight. Adding more spawn does usually add a fuller 2nd or 3rd flush, but at a certain point the benefit is diminished and it’s just more accepted that those quarts of spawn would be of better use in another tub.

1. Just PC a grain jar that's 50-80% full of properly prepared grain. Grams after PC cycle is irrelevant.
2. Whole thread on surface condition s find it.
3. Whatever happens
4. Grams/lbs is not a ratio of volume which is what you're concerned with. Just some between 1:1 and 1:3 by volume which you could just measure with a jar.

Thanks for the reply dirtybirdx
1:I want to know weight because I am using smaller jars, when fully hydrated they have 250grams of WBS per jar just trying to match 4-6 quarts in weight when I spawn.
2: any links you recommend? the search is so filled with questions on this its hard to find a expert thread?

1. I use wheat kernels and grain bags, but I had some sterilized laying around so I sacrificed it to the God's of knowledge and filled a quart jar for you. So one quart jar filled about to the point where the jar starts to taper in is anywhere from 450-550 grams depending on how hydrated they are.
2. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23999053 this link is everything you need to know for surface conditions.
3. This is almost entirely dependent on your spawn ratio, I do 1:3 - 1:2 and I get full colonization at 10-14 days everytime, any longer and there's something wrong. After full colonization, I let it sit for about 4-7 days depending on whether theres already pins or not, and then introduce to fruiting conditions, I almost always see pins by day 20 after spawning.
4. Realistically for me to recommend an exact amount of spawn I would need dimensions of the tote, but it I had to put a number on it anywhere from 4-10 quart jars for a speedy colonization. I do 6lbs of spawn for a substrate that's 3" Depth, 25" Length, 22" Width. From my experience using a higher spawn ratio produces more total weight of mushrooms.

As the previous comment or said, we are talking volume not weight when we are talking about spawn ratios, and don't pack your substrate in the quart jar tight, just fill the jar loosely and dump it.

Thanks man! Appreciate those numbers! So 2 of my jars would be one quart, everyone talks in quarts but its hard when you don't have any lol.
so pretty much one quart jar is one lb of spawn, this is very helpful information to know when trying to understand American measurements and calculate into grams.
Sorry one other question. How many quarts does the typical 650gram block of hydrated Coir make?

No problemo, been there buddy, good to see you've done quite a bit of research.
I do a bit bigger batches when I do mine, so I can't be quite sure how many quarts, I just go by weight now that I've figured out my ratios. I have a big postal scale, so it's just easier for me, but I know one 750 gram block + 225 grams of vermiculite will do one of my "tubs". If you did one block plus say 3 quarts of verm id be willing to bet you could do 2 of your tubs with a 3" Depth tho, not 4".
Actually, give me like 30 mins, I have a bin of substrate sterilized that's gunna be wasted anyways, so I'll do the math and figure out the quarts.
