Myceliumagic said: Hey there I don't have a brick of coir but I do have a sack of it. Would it be ok to measure it out by weight? How much does a brick of coir typically weigh? I have tried googling but there is a lot of variation in the answers. I'm going to guess 600 - 650grams is about right?
Thanks
Weigh out your coir on a digital scale.
Break it up and weigh out your desired amounnt.

Hey, thanks for the writeup!
In the tek it says: > The temp of the coir needs to be 80-90 degrees before you can add spawn.
What degrees are meant here? 80-90°C or 80-90°F?

Say I only have 4 WBS jars or 2.5 quarts of spawn? Could I just use half of the other ingredients and I would still be fine? Or no?

If I make this how long would I be able to store it? Can I just close the lid and use it for the future?

you are pasteurizing the coir/verm with the hot water (in the bucket). use PC to sterilize (e.g. grains)

its not true pasteurization either, its a hot water bath to hydrate the coir. more cooking the coir than pasteurizing. coir is the only substrate you can do this with everything else requires proper pasteurization. you only sterilize grains or agar or your tools in the pc.

You could probably get something closer to true pasteurization using water heated to 170-180F (accounting for heat loss here to get into range) instead of boiling.
But then again, I am not sure it even matters, because I can think of several high volume cultivators off the top of my head that just use hot water right out of the tap.

whatever 1 gal of water and 650g of coir with some verm weighs.. I really dont think anyone has weighed up their prepped substrate. it makes about 10qts of substrate so you want about 5 qts of spawn for a 1:2 ratio. we dont really measure in lbs..

I think its cause lots of vendor mail order stuff is sold in pounds... X lbs of spawn.. X lbs of substrate, etc.

Water weighs 1 gram per ml, 3785 ml/gm per gallon, +650 gm coir, = 4435 gm 454 gm per lb so roughly 10lbs of sub after adding verm and gypsum

I understand it's best to use sub directly after cool down, but its sat for approx 18 hours. I just want to make sure it's still ok to use, don't want to risk any contams. Lid is sealed
Thanks!

coir verm can be used a couple months after its been prepped and stored in the bucket. Ive seen people use it 3 months later with no issues. 18hrs is nothing.

I'm a unit-of-measurement-deficient American. Can someone tell me how many cups or quarts a brick of coir is? I have a bag of loose coir.
