Portebella mushrooms

I’m interested in growing some portebella mushrooms and I’ve found many places where I can get shiitake spawn bags, spores and prints but does anyone know where I could get a fully colonized portebella? I figured I could just buy some fresh from Whole Foods or something and make a spore print, put it in agar, grow from there but I would rather get a print from my own stash or clone my best one. Basically I need some edibles to “hide” my special ones lol. I’ll be researching how to grow them but just wanted a head start. If not I’ll go with a spore print to agar. Thanks!

Go with A. aegerita then, not agaricus sp. which don't look anything like cubes.
Much easier to grow too. And they actually look a little like cubes.

I think I’m going to just try to get a sporeprint from a very fresh mushroom. I really want portebella mushrooms. I’m going to try blue oysters but I’m dead set on portebella. Just need my hepa filter to get here faster so I can do some agar safely. I’m super noob with agar I rather start with my flow hood.

Are you familiar with growing agaricus? Just saying, it's not a noob species. But good luck

Nope definitely not lol, I’ve been starting to do some research for sure and have been finding that out. But I like a challenge. I’ll be a Thomas Edison and fail 10000 times for that one glorious moment.

It's not un-doable at all, just do your research and you can get it!

Just that because it's the most basic grocery store mushroom there is, you'd think it would be the easiest to grow, but it's really not. Wood lovers are much easier to start with.
If you're experienced in cubes though it shouldn't be much of an issue. I haven't grown agaricus myself because I can just buy it at the grocery store for cheaper than I can grow it. It's a secondary composer, I think people usually use compost, I think there's a casing involved, but I could be wrong on all these as I haven't grown it.

I’m familiar with cubes, I have literally a ton of manure lol. Have lime, coir, gypsum, coir, chicken manure, straw, whole bunch of other stuff. But like you said I’m doing my due diligence in researching it first though. Appreciate your words of caution.

Also you would be much better off cloning than taking a print.

I’m working up to cloning bod lol. I just started agar, I want to get my first darn flush done first. Plus I’m still waiting on my hepa filter for my flow hood. For the more advance procedures I would much rather have a working flow hood than my sab. While I used to grow lbs a long time ago, I literally have to relearn everything because it has been 8-10 years lol.

A lot of edibles you're going to get pretty random performance from spores. And predictive performance from commercial cultures

Cloning is far less advanced than isolating from spore if you ask me. I used to take clones all the time when all I had was a SAB. Especially with agaricus, it should be easy as fuck.

Alright I’ll try the clowning in a sab, only thing I need some more dishes. My 500 pack should be here this week and I will give it a go. Until then I’ll watch RR video and read the TEKs. Thanks for the info! I would love to make some button mushrooms in addition to the portebella. I can get sawdust and other materials like wood chips for free if necessary. They are building homes everywhere in my neighborhood, if I ask them they will let me fill up bucket loads.

Portobellos are just bigger button mushrooms. They grow on a composted mix of horse/chicken manure and straw.

Working out the kinks with my agar first lol. Never did it in the past I just did LC from ms. For the cloning I’m waiting for my HEPA filter to get here so I can put my FH together and have a little breathing room lol. Still improving the sab sterile work. Sometimes I just want to say eh f it and just do it without but I know that lesson too hard.

cloning is not like 10000x harder. agar work is agar work. sometimes it just takes longer.

Yeah I figured, I just literally have so much going on I don’t want to add more to the mix haha. Got my first batch of agar and going to transfer those, plus have 4 LC I need to test out, and if the LC is good a have a ton of grain prepped. Plus I gotta finish the last of my hpoo. Also got 12 ms grain jars. Been trying out everything since I got back into the hobby. First one ready to go is an oyster lol. Got a 930 for $400 so that was a pretty decent deal considering the times, I won’t have to spend as much time prepping grain lol. Had to get a 10psi regulator for my burner because it just burned too hot to keep a constant 15-16 psi. 10psi will give me more room for adjustment hopefully. If not down to a 5psi, note to self 65k btu is great for grain prep but a bitch with a pc.
