Hey everyone, glad to join you here on the forum,
I have been thinking about growing mushrooms for a long time and have finally decided to pull the trigger and start. I have a ton of questions so any information you have is appreciated. I live in a relatively small apartment so nothing too big.
Specifically: What kind of things do I need to start, Should I start with a premade kit or buy everything separate? I have a budget of around $1000 and would like to do whatever I can to make sure my first grow succeeds. Any tips or suggestions for this newbie would be greatly appreciated. Also directions to reputable places where I can get what I need would be amazing.

Hello and welcome.
This is a bit of a loaded question / request haha.
You will first need to decide which method you will use to grow. For beginners, the PF TEK method with liquid spore solution is typically cited as being the easiest. Here is a link to a well explained PF TEK.https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086/fpart/all/vc/1
But in general you will need (for PF TEK method):
- pressure cooker
dehydrator 250mL wide mouth mason jars Vermiculite Brown Rice Flour Perlite Liquid Spore Syringe a clear plastic container (20 to 40 L) for fruiting a clear plastic container for a glove box (40 L) lighter / alcohol lamp tin foil cleaning products spray bottle
Thats a bit of a rough list, I may be missing a few things but those are the major items. I definitely recommend going over that link as that will walk you through from start to finish.
Good Luck!

What kind of mushrooms do you plan on growing? Cubensis?
If you doing the PF Tek (witch I would recommend as a beginner) you don't need a pressure cooker, just a large pot with a lid.
If you doing your work in a still air box I would recommend a 110qt clear plastic bin, it gives you way more space to move around and keep your jars in there.

I wouldn't recommend a glove box, build a S.A.B.(still air box) I have had experience with box and the sab works a lot better, is easier to use, and less complicated to build. I have done hundreds of agar transfers, g2g transfers, and inoculated PF jars in a sab without any contamination.

Agreed, I use a still air box but habitually call it a glove box. My Bad.

Start with a heavy arsenal of knowledge. Read until your eyes bleed and then some.
You can start with PF Tek (brf cakes) if you want to but its probably easier to jump straight into monotubs. BRF cakes are okay I guess if you just wanna get your feet wet and say you did it but its more prep, more maintenance and significantly less yield than doing a monotub(s).
Regardless of what anyone says, do yourself a favor and don't inoculate directly from syringe. Learn how and why agar work will be your saving grace.

I couldn't agree more. I would assume your multi spore syringes are contaminated. (I'd say about 50% of mine have been) It's a lot better so see it in a few days on agar then wait weeks to not having your jars colonize from mold or worse bacteria. I do agar in a still air box at the edge of my bench, I just pull it over the edge and work up under it. I have yet to get a contam I couldn't identify as self inflicted. I did some agar work out in the open to make sure I wasn't just getting lucky and that got contaminates. I also recommend and All American pressure cooker, I have a 921, and convert it to a sterilizer for higher pressures. If I had it to do over I'd get something bigger then a 921.
