It goes without saying that you should use desiccant for any storage method.
Would you put a desiccant in a vacuum sealed plastic as well?

I think most vacuum sealers will work well... the biggest problem I’ve had is with off brand bags.. don’t skimp on those (food saver brand are great) and do two lines of seals, making sure the area you’re making the seal is clean. I’ve also found that pushing down slightly on the top of the sealer while it’s making the seal, helps.
This is the guy I have. Here
Another trick is to cancel the vacuuming and restart it before it starts making the seal a couple times... that’ll let you get extra air out if you’re vacuum sealing a decent amount of dried fruits

Im actually not sure if you would need desiccant in a vacuumed bag. I would probably put a little in just to be safe but I don't have any experience with vacuum sealing. I just use gallon zip locks or buckets depending on how much I have.

I just picked up a Food Sever at Costco (they go on sale about once a year). Do you if these sealers like the one you have if they can be used to seal mushroom grow bags (when colonizing grain)?

I’ve wondered that myself.. I don’t use bags so I’ve never gotten around to needing to ask. I feel like the concept is the same but you can’t seal passed a few inches because of how they’re set up.. mine at least, so idk if that’d be a problem with grow bags

I put them in a zip lock bag with a desiccant pack and put the zip lock in an air tight jar. Then put the jar in the freezer.
Light, oxygen and high temperatures weaken all organic life thus frozen foods last longer than foods left in the hot sun etc

From what I've been learning of grow bags as I gear up to use them, they require a "plenum" aka a small pocket of air around the top where the filter patch is, so I dunno how well a vacuum sealer would work. Normally, if a person is gonna seal a bag they'll use an impulse sealer, which is kind of similar to a vacuum sealer, but without the vacuum part. They might sell a 2-in-1 sealer, haven't looked
Otherwise, people will use things like zip ties (my plan) or just fold the top tightly without sealing

Word. The vacuum sealer I have and most that I’d imagine also have a sealer function (it’s how you can make your own sized bags from a roll of sealer bags). the problem I can see is that a impulse sealer doesn’t have a back to it like a vacuum sealer so you can pull as much bag end through that you want and seal anywhere along the length of the bag... as long as you only need to seal the top 3” of a grow bag, the vacuum sealer can act as a 2-in-1

Cool, good to know. That extra function may make a vacuum sealer a worthwhile investment for me sooner rather than later. Thank you

The only other thing I’d worry about is if the food sealer bags are the same thickness as grow bags.. if they’re too much thicker, maybe you can to run the function more than once in the same spot... maybe someone has experience sealing grow bags with a vacuum sealer and can give more than speculations

That's alright, just the idea of using it for multiple functions is enough help to get me started and do some research. Appreciate it

I just use desiccant packets from amazon for bags. Any kind will work, I just get whats cheap at the time. Just don't use the loose desiccant as it will get all mixed up in the dust at the bottom.

I am doing that now - pint and quart - but they just don't hold much. Good for a few oz but not much more.
I agree. You can get a lot of little ones into a quart, but not so many bigger ones, and I like to keep the shrooms intact as much as possible. Gallon mason jars are expensive, about $32 for two on Amazon, but they're worth it.

Dry em and put em in something. Like a bag, or a jar, or whatever. Don't over think it. As long as you dont let them get moist again they will last forever. Or at least as long as they need too anyway. People that say their mushrooms lost potency from storage probably grew bunk booms in the first place. I ate 4 grams last week of mush that I found on the dehydrator floor. They were there for at least 3 months wgen I found them. I ran em again and made tea just in case they were dirty or whatever. No bag. No jar. Just shrooms in the hot humid garrage open air. I tripped balls. Had a very deep spiritual self healing experiance. Grow clones that are proven to be strong and you wont have any problems with (lost potancey) if you got room in the freezer make tea from fresh mushrooms and freeze it in doses not beacuse it will last longer, its just beacuse fresh = more better IMO.

Bro go get you a a gallon of pickles from wally world. 5.88 for a gallon jar and a gang of pickles.
Edit: did a price check to make sure I wasent talking out of my ass. They are 4.88 you could get 6 jars and more pickles than you could give away for the same price as 2 jars on Amazon. Sure that pickle smell takes some work to get gone but for a third of the price id say its worth the effort.

Dry until completely dry and store in anything air tight (ziplock bags are not air tight) if you want them to last long. I prefer vacuum sealing for long term storage. I only use desiccant packets when i have them and haven't noticed them being that helpful. Vacuum a little tighter if you want to save space. Pulverize in a blender and vaccum tightly or keep in mason jar to save tons of space. I prefer to keep pulverized fruits in the freezer because the actives are more vulnerable but i haven't done the tests to know if it's really needed. Airtight storage is an absolute must though.
A vacuum sealer can absolutely be used as an impulse sealer but i doubt would properly seal through the multiple layers of a gusseted grow bag. I wouldn't trust it anyways. Zip ties, tape, paper clips..... all kinds of things work for sealing bags but i prefer my 5mm impulse sealer. She's a beast.
