Cyclocybe aegerita / Black Poplar identification
    #26899939 - 08/26/20 05:45 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, sorry for the subcategorization - this is part ID request (later), part microscopy perhaps but I wanted to generally discuss safely IDing C. aegerita vs. the Agrocybes and others.

I found a whole bunch of presumed C. aegerita which I'd gladly go into. Trying to key it out and looking for info online though I find it confusing what it takes to conclusively ID it as I would like to use them to try eating but moreover culturing and allow others to as well through spores.

Also pointing out extra that I am in Europe but it does seem like a lot of usual suspects grow widely distributed in NA as well.

There are warnings everywhere to not pick them cause they get easily confused but am I to take this is for the uninitiated? Because the Agrocybe complex seems not the most obviously delineated.
The warnings then are mostly about confusing with (deadly) Amanitas or perhaps Agaricus both of which are easily distinguished by spore color.

Everything I have checked does point to aegerita, except they grow on the edge of a big urban grass field (under poplars). It's just that I am surprised if there is so much poplar wood debris buried under a well maintained field so my mind goes to some of the grassland Agrocybes. However those seem to appear earlier in the year and not on the tail of a summer, heatwave no less.
But climate is so weird rn, so I did look into Agrocybe dura.

NaOH did nothing, spore size appears to be about 6 x 8 µm and spore print seriously brown. Also seemed quite pale but I think the nice brown apex developing is more variable than some descriptions make it out to be. Other macroscopic descriptions all match fine from what I can tell.
Smells pleasantly of benzaldehyde, taste mild not bitter and I can kiinda get what they mean with radish-like but not spicy.

So, don't mind sharing pics and other stuff later but can we discuss it a little in general terms. From what I told you, what would be some definitive tests to at least rule out everything that would make a culinary test dangerous? Anything that could after all this still be such a close lookalike and also dangerous or highly unpleasant to eat?

I guess if so concerned could always sautee and taste well but not swallow.
