What's going on with this little guy? Is this tearing away from the stem normal? I don't think anything is wrong per se... just curious

It seems fine, probably just some of the cake going along the shroom. Even if it is tearing no big worries. Good job man

Looks like the cake was made on the wet side. Dial it back a lil next time

For clarity, can you expound on "made on the wet side"? I did take this picture right after misting if that's what you're saying...

When they "mature" early, or the veil is non-existent it can indicate when you made the cake it was above field capacity.

Ah, gotcha.  I did follow the proper ratios and did the hand squeeze to test for capacity and seemed fine to me 🤷‍♂️. But definitely noted. Thanks for the input 👍👍👍

Forsure. I don't like pf tek. But that's a telltale sign of saturated substrate.
That's not to say there couldnt also be a variety of other genes and conditions at play, that's just my experience

So, that actually begs another question now that I think about it; let's say it was indeed made over capacity, is there anything I need to look out for or do to make sure it reaches the desired results?

Brf.cakes shouldnt be made to field capacity, you shouldnt beable to squuze water out of them like a sub or casing.

I was under the assumption that "at field capacity" was synonymous with "acceptable" as far as the water ratio is concerned.

2:1:1, Okay.

But what if the vermiculite is really fine? I've noticed different feeling consistencies with different vermiculite particle sizes, all using the 2:1:1 ratio.

2:1:1 is based on fine verm.  If incorrectly using course verm, use less water.  Best results will be found by following the BRF tek video.

Sounds like you got it figured out, brotha. Good luck. Just don't add too much water. When I was new to this, I added water until I thought it was at field capacity, but I was way off. Less is better than more.

Less is more, but field capacity is strictly for bulk substrate preparation.  It doesn't apply to making brf cakes.  If you can squeeze even one single drop out of a brf mix, it's too wet.
