agrocybe aegerita blobs & metabolites

Hi, I'm experimenting growing agrocybe aegerita in a monotub. I read that AA are CO2 tolerant, relative to most other edibles. I thought I'd give it a shot for simplicity. To add to the experiment, I've used grain spawn to coir. I've been successful previously with AA, using beechwood sawdust bulk, to a well ventilated tub. I realise that monotub + coir isn't optimal for this species. It will probably fail, but hey, I was curious and wanted to give it a try. I'm seeing a *very* tiny area of pinning, growing through a gap where the casing hasn't colonised. The rest of the casing is matted with wispy myc, and has these huge blobs of dense myc, which are oozing what I presume are metabolites. Smell isn't unpleasant, just a little acrid, sweet, chemically, hint of ammonia. Temp is 68f. Any advice, suggestions? Is this a case of poor FAE, perhaps too high temp? I was thinking of relocating somewhere cooler and leaving the lid off, or removing the polyfill from the top holes? Anybm help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

That's an infection, though for the life of me I can never remember the name...
Anyway, watch and see, but if after a while you don't get much out of it you'll probably wanna toss it.

Thanks Forrester. I think I'll be relocating this one to an outbuilding, hopefully it's nothing airborne. Funny, I used the same LC batch for a few sawdust cakes as well. One of them began producing lots of metabolites, so I tossed it. The other cakes look healthy, but are taking ages to fully colonise, like 8 weeks. Possibly infected LC. Ho hum.

Yeah it's an odd one, I got it several times but it didn't seem to spread around.

Thanks, it's a relief to hear that this normally doesn't spread. It's really starting to hum now, so I'll most likely dump it on the compost and cut my losses.

My objective was to find a suitable edibles candidate for quick and easy monotub tek, without the hassle of substrate blocks and humidity tents. I may be wrong, but I suspect the problem was the LC that I obtained. I have a little LC left, so I could try cleaning it up on agar before my next attempt.
In the meantime I have a plate of Pleurotus eryngii growing out. Once that's ready, I'll try repeating the experiment with that & post the results if it's successful or otherwise.

This is Mycogone perniciosa, the blobs with amber colored droplets are typical for it. Just clean everything that came in contact with it well. In most cases it comes from the casing layer, usually peat, but I guess coir might also harbour spores from it.

Thanks DutchMyco, I'm writing it down this time
I've never used a casing in my life so that's interesting that I got it before.

It's common in soil I believe, and spores can travel by wind, so it's quite common. IIRC the spores are easily killed during pasteurization, but when something just doesn't go perfect, it can pop up. Plus it makes different types of spores, one thick walled type that can stay dormant for a couple of years until better circumstances.
When growing in bags or tubs, I think it's easier to throw it out. In agaricus farms on large beds they sometimes remove affected mushrooms/area's and use a load of salt on it, not sure how well this works, but it would be fun to try in large monotubs, although the ones above seems pretty much fully colonized with it already.

Thanks DutchMyco, that's really useful info & something for me to read up on. I dumped the whole thing in the compost bin and the tub's soaking in a soapy bath now. Hopefully I'll be able to spot this at an earlier stage if it happens again. I used the same bucket of coir for a different species and no problems there, so I'm wondering if this somehow got in at the grain or LC stage. I don't know if that's possible.
