When using plastic jar lids, is a rubber gasket necessary? I have seen websites selling the lids with gaskets.

Not that I know of. I run plastic modded and unmodded lids with no gasket that do just fine. I imagine it wouldn't hurt, assuming it's a properly modded lid. But I wouldn't pay extra money for it if the gasket lids are more expensive than those without

The rubber gasket is usually a SHIP (self healing injection port) used for inoculations using either MS or LC syringes. If that’s your plan of action, then yes, it would be a good idea to have one. You could even make one by making a 1/4” hole and beaded with RTV silicone on front and back of hole to create your own SHIP. If you plan to use agar, I’d skip this design altogether and just included a hole and SFD for your gas exchange - that part is essential regardless of the design. Some people don’t even modify the plastic lids as they get a good amount of GE already from being an imperfect seal.

I am using the Lids for Liquid culture. Not talking about the SHIP, im talking about the rubber gasket that goes under the jar lid.

I may be wrong, but I think he’s talking about the actual ring gasket that goes in the threading.
The plastic lids say ‘not for canning’ so maybe this additional gasket allows for the extra seal needed.

I used the plastic lids on some LC jars, and it has particles floating but does not seem to be colonizing. I believe the plastidc lids are not completely air tight.
I did try filling the jars with water, put plastic lid on and turned upside down, no leaking.

Most people like to run their lids upside down so its easier to open in the SAB (I do it too).
I have left them like normal jars and the pc cycle kind of seals the rubber down on the glass. So you end up struggling to open it in SAB work. You dont want to have to do strength movements when the air needs to be still.
Edit: I misread the post, the above refers to metal jar lids.

I use unmodified plastic lids for grain jars. They colonize well when loosened half a turn.
If you're looking to make the plastic lids absolutely air tight I would get the gaskets too, just to be safe.
