Aerial Mycelium on Steroids! Can I please get some guidance? (3rd attempt)
    #26898193 - 08/25/20 06:25 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I posted about this 2 other times: the first got 100 views but no response... the second got about half as many views in about half the time so I deleted it because it figured it was perhaps too wordy...

TL;DR: Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on with this mycelium?
(Pics below)

I know PE/APE varieties are supposed to produce blobs but unless there are multiple varieties of blobs, I’m pretty sure these are not blobs. I have another tub producing blobs and it resembles every other occurrence of blobs I’ve encountered. This shit looks like aerial mycelium on steroids.

I’ve heard that APE/PE tubs will produce weird looking mycelium before fruiting, but these tubs still haven’t fruited, whereas their “sister” tubs, created at the same time, are already fruiting.  I’ve since added a casing layer to some of the tubs in hopes that this is all just a result of the tubs having no casing layer, but I’m truly at a loss. I haven’t found any other posts or photos that look anything like this strangeness, so I would love it if I could get some guidance on this (...pretty please? ...with some cubensis on top? Lol)

Has anyone encountered this type of growth pattern before? Is this normal? Does this look like a possible bacterial contamination?

*Important Considerations*
-Same spawn was used in multiple tubs, some of which show “normal” growth and are already producing fruits, (which leads me to think that it’s not bad spawn or bad bulk sub).
-Some tubs have pins but the amount is sparse and with no real pattern other than the fact they’re mostly around the outside edge of the tub
-They’re all fruiting directly in the shoebox that have a few we’ll placed holes near the top and near substrate level. I usual convert to a dubtub when the fruits need more head space. This method has served me well thus far so I’ve never had a need for a SGFC (except when I did cakes in the beginning). The spawn was created using hard winter wheat and half the jars were noc’d with PE spores, and the others with an LC, both from a reputable vendor, going to bulk sub (50:50+) ~1wk after 100% colonization.
-Mycelium growth in some jars (during initial spawning) and some tubs (during bulk sub spawn) showed significantly “aggressive” growth with very thick, ropey rhizomorphic growth
-ALL TUBS SMELL 100% LIKE HEALTHY MUSHROOM MYCELIUM
-Mother LC batch from which my LC came from has produced “normal” mycelium/maturation patterns for other mycologists.

Thanks in advance for all your help and assistance with this matter! Y’all are such an invaluable resource, the mycology game wouldn’t be half of what it is without your insight and experience

That puffy cotton ball looking myc is usually sign of bacterial infection. Another sign of contamination is the yellow metabolites on the surface. I would say you had bacterial spawn. You say same spawn was used in multiple tubs, how? I see you used jars inoculated with spores. That’s likely the source, spore syringe to grain is not the best. Spore syringe usually contain contams.
