Are dogs overpriced?

I have a border collie/australian shepherd mix I bought a few years ago for 400$. She is a female and the most loving creature I have even encountered. Loyal as fuck, protective of my kids, and so affectionate that I often think she is more human than most of the people I have known in my life...
Anyway.. I was looking at getting another dog, maybe another collie/shepherd mix or just an aussie. People want anywhere from 800$ to 3000$ for a puppy. Even taking into consideration two months of raising them, vet bills (maybe) and shots etc. This seem like a ton of profit. Maybe I am just a cheap bastard. Iβm still looking but I cant drop over a grand on a dog. I mean, I could, but I wont out of principle. I have plenty of available funds to properly care for a new dog but 400-800$ seems to be my max.

You could adopt? Normally $600 tops to do so. I would have done so if time were less a factor in my decision and funds were more so...
Personally, I don't think dropping $1200 (what I paid to avoid adoption paperwork) is a lot for something so fucking wonderful and amazing and lifechanging as she.

I have sheep and goats on my farm. You canβt always adopt a βworking dogβ. And training from puppyhood gives better chances of integration into a family with kids. Iβm not opposed. If I could find an adoption candidate that fit my parameters I would be even happier.

A fancy dog from a fancy breeder can definitely get up there in the thousands, but a lot of the time it's just some asshole trying to cash in. We paid $400 for our dog.

I paid $400 for my dog. I think that's too much personally. Because it's a dog and people are just being greedy. A couple hundred really isn't out of the question particularly if they've been well taken care of but specifically there should be less people thinking their mixed breed is worth money. That shit is stupid. Theres a lot more that goes in to pedigreed breeding so that makes more sense. Mixed? Nah. $200. I feel like some people treat their pets like an ATM. And fucking cats. Jesus Christ why? $1500 for a fucking Maine Coons, Ragdoll ect? Fucking retards.

I think they are over priced, we sold our shihtzu heavy but mixed pups for like $400 and we did it twice
it started when we "rescued" our first dog, my step brothers friend got it as early as you can get a puppy, but couldnt keep for some reason so we "rescued" a puppy as young as you can get a new one
we named her Maggie, her mother was a purebred shihtzu show dog and her father was a shiztzu/something else mix, so Maggie was like 3/4 shihtzu, here she is recently

when maggie was about 2, my parents were walking her in the park and there was a guy with a male dog that looked like a shihtzu, so my stepdad payed him like $50 or something to let his dog jump ours
maggie had puppies shortly after, we had to get maggie fixed cause giving birth almost killed her, it some how ripped a tear in her stomach, she needed emergency surgery and couldnt give birth again
we sold the puppies for like $400 each, but as they grew it was apparent that they were pretty mixed, they look kinda like shihtzu terrier mixed or something, we kept one and named her Blue, here she is recently

When Blue was two we also got her pregnant, I dont know anything about the male where we found him or what he looked like, but he must have been more shihtzu then Blue was cause the puppies look more like a shihtzu then Blue, they look like Maggie really
We didnt keep a puppy this time, but we sold one to a close friend who drops it off at our house 3-4 days a week while she is at work, this dogs name is Lady, but I usually call her Ladybug for some reason, the mail lady heard me call her ladybug once and really liked that name, but I was like, uh, her name is actually Lady
I dont have any pictures of Lady on this computer though

Keep in mind that the adoption fee is just the beginning. You'll have to buy food and supplies as well throughout the dogs life(while these things aren't terribly expensive, it's still a legitimate expense to consider). Then, remember that you're probably going to need to visit a veterinarian a handful of times throughout the dog's life (this number will increase as it gets older, and it can start to get expensive).
Overall, I would say yes, dogs are pretty expensive. However, if you find a bond in the relationship with your pet, then I'd say it's worth every penny.

You can adopt puppies of very specific breeds - my ACD/Blue Heeler is not exactly a well known breed yet puppies come up here frequently:

Just be prepared to spend time filling in forms for the money you'll be saving...

I duno, I was stoned or something, that guy lasted 24 hours before someone knocked him down into pieces, every time I stepped out on to the porch I would catch it in the corner of the eye, and would make me jump, I dont know why it scared me, Im the one who made it, I dont have a picture but I put a guitar in his hands after the dog

I think the robot dogs are the shit. I want a couple of them running arond my house once the AI gets a little better, but I think its probably only a year or two away. These things are fucking awesome and dont shit everwhere.

Ick. Fuck that shit man. I've enough fucking technology in my life as it is without wanting to replace 'mans best friend' with some robotic monstrosity.
The very thought makes me feel a little ill...

haha fair nuff. im definitely not enough of a dog person to really feel the same way.
oh yah back to the topic though, I could totally pay 2-3k for one of the robot dogs, assuming the kinks are worked out, which I guess is considered a premium in the real dog world. Thats probably my limit though.

Yeah pretty much the only benefits to a dog for me are not there with a robot. And pretty soon with robotic advancement they will make the critical error of installing a WILL to survive / not be decommissioned/reprogrammed/ have a form of artificial sentience. Itβs gonna be iRobot and the matrix up in this bitch. So not only are you not helping the dogs you are contributing to the downfall of humanity inevitably eventually!
I will be like will smith living with my real dog in the apocalypse.

for sure i am not the only one who is just a lllliitle bit curios to see how the robot AI uprising plays out? Here is how I think any situation like Irobot, terminator, etc would really go: robots can think, want to kill humans. all humans die. (2 week period)
Robot befriends dogs, builds best friend like bond with living creature. Eventually is disgusted with dog pee over robot kids charging port. builds robot dog. robot dog army takes over world.

Yeah I thought $400 was still kind of a rip. Best way to get a dog is to have a friend who has a litter of puppies they want to get rid of.
