Gas exchange on inoculated supstrate
    #26897994 - 08/25/20 12:56 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hi.

I am asking this cause most of the tutorials use gas exchange holes (2 holes on the sides of the tub) after inoculation of supstrate. But then there are some that doesn't. Does inoculated supstrate in colonization faze need gass exchange (specifically when we are talking about cubensis)?

I am asking since I did it without holes. 8 days has passed and I am not even close to 50% of colonization.

Gas exchange is needed at every step. This is why we use filter patches on our jars/bags. Mycelium growth always causes CO2 so we must allow that to permeate out. The purpose of putting micropore tape on tubs is to allow the CO2 to escape. Once the substrate has fully colonized you will then switch the micropore tape out with polyfill. This is because we want to introduce fresh air to induce pinning but retain humidity.

I assumed so. But why does some doesn't use gas exchange holes on their tubes? Probably they think that the gap between the lid and tub (when lid is closed) is enough for a little bit gas exchange. Is it?

If it is not, I can drill 2 holes in my tub now (with some warm object) and cover it with micropore tape. Later, when in fruiting, I can just remove the tape.

Btw is polyfill material same as puting micropore tape on the hole?

No need to use micropore and polyfil. Both can be used to regulate fae (fresh air exchange) and humidity.  A traditional monotub has 6 holes. 2 on each long side at substrate level and 1 on each short side at the top. Keep it more open up top and tighter down low.

Some people use unmodified tubs and get good results. Im not one of them.  My shoeboxes are unmodified and do great. But my modified full tubs perform better in my environment than my unmodified ones

The ones that don’t use gas exchange are going to fruiting conditions from day one. So instead of restricting the tub to tiny amount of ge it’s got fresh air flowing through.
