Plastic with built-in fungicide?
    #26897784 - 08/24/20 08:10 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I'm experimenting with starting mushroom substrate in sealable plastic bowls, and in ziplock baggies. One of the bowls is a 1 quart brf cake started on 8'18, and it's showing good myc spots after 5 days. The bowl is by Rubbermaid.
The other 2 plastic tubs (of a no-name brand) have subs made of grated-up brf cakes, mixed with coir/verm. Started on 8/19, there is zero growth, also a 'fruity' smell.

Another sub, grated up brf w/cv, is sealed in a plastic ziplock bag--also zero growth & fruity smell.
My question is: how likely are these bags to have a 'germicide' mixed in? I've tried this technique when I was just starting out, and thought the lack of success was due to 'newbie errors'. Now, I'm not so sure.
Do some brands of plastic have poisons or fungicides mixed into the product?
I took the 'poisoned' subs, and dumped them into a Sterilite tub. I had hoped these might revive in a better environment, but the subs really look dead. These will probably go in the garbage in a couple of days, can't even put them in the compist pile. For what it's worth, the suspect/no-name containers were all made in China.

Has anyone else made similar observations?

If there is zero growth and has a "fruity" smell then you don't have clean spawn. It should smell like mushrooms when fully colonized, if not it should smell like the substrate you used. Coir/verm should have no "fruity" smell, so it sounds like contams

You're missing my point: the spawn and the newly inoculated substate DID smell like normal mushrooms. After a couple of days in the suspect plastic, a strange sweet smell developed.
I contend that there is an anti-fungal 'biocide' in some of these cheap plastics, and I'm asking if anyone else has has similar experiences or observations. There was nothing wrong with the brf cakes I used.

Not even contams would grow in these plastic containers.
