P. Careulea (Blue Passionflower)
    #26897791 - 08/24/20 08:14 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I have growing in my backyard a very beautiful vine of Passiflora Careulea which I believe to be medicinal. After doing some research I had decided to harvest a batch of its flowers which I dried in a food dehydrator on 115 degrees F for approximately 6 to 8 hours. I then crushed up the dried flowers and stored them for later use.

To prepare it I boiled water in a kettle and steeped the dried flower material with a tea diffuser in a cup for about 10 minutes. I then filtered it by decanting it into another cup through a coffee filter. I drank the whole cup and within 15 minutes I began to feel the effects. It was very relaxing and I was able to fall asleep right away. I have done this twice and noticed the same effect on both occasions.

My concern however is of the conflicting information I have read online. Some sources claim P. Careuelea and P. Incarnata are safe when prepared this way and ingested while other sources claim that all parts of the plant are poisonous. Am I poisoning myself? What is your experience with, or what useful information do you have, of this plant?

I grow and use passiflora incarnata as part of my changa mixes. My home grown one is quite potent compared to purchased dried herb. The leaves have significantly more beta carbolines and MAOIs than the flowers. There's a possibility of contraindications there, but as I always mix it with other MAOIs anyway I'm already avoiding serotonin agonists.

A quick search online shows caerulea leaves and roots to contain cyanide. Probably not great to eat. Flowers are probably alright, but if you want to use it medicinally just find yourself an incarnata specimen I reckon.
