If a grow room doesn't need to be sterile...
    #26897199 - 08/24/20 01:57 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Just a quick question looking for some quick, simple answers:

I keep reading that a grow room doesn't need to be sterile (hence, a UVC light would have no benefit for example). If I am getting bins with green mold, then is it safe to say the contam is coming from either substrate and/or grain spawn? And to reverse the question, if the spawn and substrate are contam free then the bins are safe from contam?

Thanks! :-)

If you are getting contams before first flush and you are using just coir, verm, and optionally gypsum as your substrate your spawn is almost certainly to blame.

If your spawn is clean you should be able to get a first flush off a tub with CVG substrate before it contams.  CVG doesn't contaminate on it's own very quickly and I've used week+ old hydrated CVG without issues.

Subs like manure usually need to be pasteurized but I've heard of people using Black Cow out of the bag.

Yeah if everything is sterile and perfectly inoculated and spawned, then the only source of contam would be air/misting. But at that point your mycelium already has a huge head start and contam may appear after several flushes, at which point it doesnt even matter.

We are switching to CVG sub now, but were using CMV. We pasteurized using steam and getting the core to 140-50 for 2 hours. We were using Black Kow. The bins get just about fully colonized and then a light coating of green appears. Very frustrating... :-)

I see what your saying, but if the grow room doesn't need to be sterile, and say that the spawn and sub are non-contaminated, why would misting and fanning be a cause? It seems if misting and fanning alone can cause contamination, then the grow room should be sterile to prevent that contam. Yes?

2 hours is to long, your hitting partial sterilization at that point, you shouldnt need to go over an hour at core temp

Let me rephrase what I said: at that point it doesnt matter if you get contam because you will already get your 2-3 flushes. Why is it so important to keep the spent tub sterile?

And stay away from UV, it is not gonna solve your problems, but it may give you skin cancer.

Gotcha! I'm hoping that going with CVG will be a big move in the right direction. Thanks for your input!

Okay, thanks! If I forego the manure and stick to just CVG, do you think skipping pasteurization is okay? Or still pasteurize?

I would avoid manure for your first attempts at bulk if you already have both coir and verm.  CVG is safer for beginners.  Follow the damien5050 bucket tek in my signature, it will explain what you will need to do.  CVG doesnt need a proper pasteurization.

:whathesaid:
Cvg dont need proper pasturization just pour boiling water over it in a tote come back an hour later n ur done , some people dont even boil the water, i find the myc eats the coir a bit better after its cooked a little tho.
