Would you rather leave stumps or break the sub a little after harvesting?
    #26896749 - 08/24/20 10:10 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So I started leaving stumps but it seems like it can cause contamination issues sometimes, so I started trying to just pull out the mushrooms but sometimes it’ll pull out a little of the sub. I was thinking that would be better then leaving stumps, so I figured I’d ask you guys.

Cut harvest at substrate level and you won't have stumps. Either way leaving them doesnt cause contamination issues. It caused the stumps themselves to rot which doesn't do anything besides become gross.

I always just tear them out leaving holes, but I've heard that leaving the stumps can increase the ideal microclimate at the surface. I haven't tested this myself so I can't say for sure though.

Stumps usually get colonized, there`s even pins growing on them.
But i only cut if i get a big monster flush, so the tub is done then.
I like to twist and pull carefully, but this also may lead to contams leaving craters.

I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on with my shoeboxes, I have many of them so i
I’m not sure exactly. I always have nice first flushes. Say you harvest the first flush, but there are a bunch of mushrooms that’ll be ready to harvest in a few days leftover. I would give the sub a good mist right before or after the first flush but my sub would keep shrinking away from the sides of the shoebox and if I misted too often to combat this, the surface would turn kind of hard and really mess up the flushes, cause pins to abort. Then the white fuzz or snow would takeover. Some say it’s from too low FAE but I would leave my tops unsnapped.

I just did a first flush last night, I was going to dunk the sub in water tonight for a bit. I’m hoping to figure out how to get consistent flushes after the first or 2nd.

Yeah, it shrinks, but not just due to moisture.
Substrate shrinks as mycelium feeds it.
You may avoid the gaps with using a liner,
that sticks to the shrinking brick.
But sometimes you get monster cubes growing there.

Yeah, your sub will shrink no matter what. It's very noticeable w/ shoeboxes because they're small so the widening gap becomes obvious

Instead of misting, tho, you could bottom water for a few hours after your first flush. If there's any water left over after X amount of hours (I'd usually leave it overnight) then you can just dump it out

I prefer bottom watering over misting and dunking 'cause you're not messing w/ the surface like w/ misting and you don't have to put something to weigh down the floating sub like w/ dunking

stumps only rot if your spawn had bacteria in it.  otherwise they recolonize

Ya I’m going to start bottom watering as I don’t like misting anymore. It’s made the surface almost hard, and definitely fucked with my boxes. I definitely had one box that must’ve been bacterial bc the mushrooms near the stumps started dying from the bottom up. After first flush I’m just going to
Bottom water, dump any water out and then leave my tops upside down.

You don't thats why they're called flushes. If you have such a large amount of tubs id just have a 1st flush shelf and then a shelf where you can let the tubs play out until you need them. Good genetics and PROPER watering (not just dunking, subs don't always need to be dunked) will push more fruits out after a good flush but the goal, for me anyways, is to give the best conditions possible to get a canopy/the most fruit of the first flush and let the tub sit somewhere. You did the first flush right if your second flush is like half the weight or less than the first. All my opinion

The only time I had stumps rot was when my ambient temperatures were far too high making the temperature at substrate level absolutely insane.

At 68f ambient I've yet to have a stump turn bad. They just turn fuzzy and revert back to mycellium like RR said they would. I get a much fuller flush if I don't rip and tear fruits out.

Having said that if I decide to stop at a second flush because a tub is giving me bad vibes then I tear them out and cut the bottoms off on a cutting board and be done with it. I've had fruits start growing from the trashcan full of trimmings beside my worktable from this.

I prefer to leave a divot myself, I’m rarely looking for more than two flushes regardless. Twist, pull, snip the butt into a bucket is my general plan.

Ever have ones that grow a big golfball sized foot into the substrate? I get those a lot on my second flush with my B+ clone some get 1"+ down into the substrate. Those I pull up and trim but I swear someone on here (RR perhaps) stated the big bulbous growth contains little actives. Still feels wrong to cut those ones at sub level and leave so much meat on the plate.

I had some PE that did exactly that once, they were like fucking potatoes that I had to try and jam the fiskars under them and pop em out without tearing the sub to shreds. They were like stones in the sub, cracking it with crazy blobness. Was fucking bananas.

My goal is a solid first flush, a “I’m happy with it “ 2nd and then a handful of monsters on the 3rd. I’m happy with that. I kind of lost track on what flush some shoeboxes were on bc my closet isn’t organized and that’s my fault, I just try to keep them looking as nice as possible.  No trich on any, just a ton of fuzz and one or two that aborted a bunch which shouldn’t have happened. Idk what went wrong, the surface got like hard and I’ve read that can happen from misting

The surface almost always gets beat up after harvest. Very few of mine hold water beads the same after the first flush.

The way I harvest depends a lot on the way the mushrooms are attached. I prefer to pull them off but if it’s a type that are really stuck on there I use a the scalpel and usually get it so the stump is almost level or even below the surface.

I never had a problem with them contaminating until recently. I’m sure it had to do with the heat and the many many moldy tubs I’ve had without deep cleaning the room. But what was happening was this powdery green grey mold started showing up on top of the aborts I left on. So gross.

Are you running a clone? If so ove found that using coir on the drier side and a couple of well timed bottom waters makes some huge mishrooms. Check it:

Thats just my experience with a few of my clones your results may vary

Genetics, water availability, sufficient nutrition, and a lack of competition are all going to factor into a fruits size. If your pinset is shit you will often see monsters no matter what flush. From an overall yield perspective I liked finding fruits that grew in hard clusters but still managed to hit 30+ grams wet.

This clone grew massive first flush fruits but I didn’t keep it cause the yield wasn’t there overall.

This clone was much better usually putting out decent sized fruit with a great pinset. The fruits weren’t monsters but they were decent. Overall yield on the other hand was far better.
