Re: How do you make your life minimalist? What have you given up? What have you gained? [Re: Anonymous #1]

Before I moved into my van, I got in the habit of giving up 1 thing a day (donating, selling or tossing). Most every item you own has a peripheral item attached to it: If you have a bike you're going to need a bike pump, spare tubes, bike rack, etc. Not advocating you get rid of your bike, but it's the first example that came to my brain. Point is: the less you have, the less you need.

It definitely helps to have someone else walk you through getting rid of stuff. We have a weird way of justifying the stuff we own that kind of goes up in smoke when we have to articulate it to someone else.

Yes, reducing clutter helps reduce stress, this is well documented.

I personally look at various objects from time to time and evaluate them from my usual objective view point. If I don't routinely use it and it doesn't have a high degree of worth or utilitarian value, I either sell it or throw it away. Realistic expectations of using the item also play a big role on if I keep it. I intend to build a workshop with a lathe and mill and I keep a small box of machining books under my bed, even though I haven't read any of them. A machine shop is years away monetarily, so the books are packed up neat and put out of the way.

Most factors include:
How often has the item be used and will I realistically use it in the future?
How much is the item worth monetarily or sentimentally?
Does the item have utilitarian uses?
Am I expected to maintain this item because it was a gift?
Can the item(s) be stored out of the way, in a neat and orderly fashion?

I have tossed a lot of stuff and plan to burn a lot of stuff too. I have a modest baseball and football card collection from a relative who has since passed on but it's not even worth shipping to someone else who might enjoy it. Anything post 1970 was so mass printed that they are unlikely to ever hold any meaningful value, nor does it hold any sentimental value. I intend to burn it as kindling and that is the only reason it's kept for now. Sucks to do that to the old man's collection but it's literally just a space hog and I don't know anyone who collects cards. Likewise, bank statements, address papers, anything sensitive is stored as kindling, rather than being thrown in the trash.

I have sold off a lot of old equipment and have gained capital to use elsewhere, as well additional space and less clutter to move around.

I parted with a few items that I need to re-buy later on, but I needed to raise funds to finish the heating arrangements on my greenhouse last winter. I probably could have made it through with a tank-top propane heater but it would still be expensive.

The next items I may dispose of are my computer hardware boxes, motherboard boxes, etc, and I'll gain space in my closet. My computer's hardware is pretty old and while I could get a few bucks for it, I'll probably just keep my old rig or find a different box when the time comes.

I let go of all my old CRT monitors, including an awesome View Sonic that could allegedly push 2K resolution but I ran it in 1600P. I hang onto my Pentium 4 and Pentium 3 computers because, well, they are special. I regret selling my last computer but it helped pay for my current one. A Pentium III slot processor with a voodoo 3 graphics card is pretty retro and people do buy them for nostalgia.

I got rid of old paintings, unimportant stuff that just collected dust.

I'm pretty much at the limit of what I can dispose of without tossing stuff I actually use or value. I would be screaming if anything happened to my few signed books!

More stuff leads to more dusting, moving stuff to clean behind it, losses in efficiency. I'm fairly practical and try to keep practical things and a minimum of attachments.
