Instant Pot to Prepare/Cook Rye/Grains [NOT STERILIZE]
    #26895766 - 08/23/20 05:46 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I've been digging around for this answer bust most threads seem to focus on using the instant pot as a sterilization or pasteurization tool.

Has anyone ever used an instant pot to prepare/cook their Rye grain/berries? I have a PC and don't intend to use the IP to sterilize but I want to know if it's OK to prepare the grains in the IP instead of on the stove to save time.

Seems like it would be perfect for that purpose and to improve efficiency but I'm wondering if I am missing something as I am relatively new to the hobby.

Has anyone done this and figured out the right timing and grain to water ratio?

Thanks!

you need a pressure cooker for that. an insta pot aint gnna provide the heat and pressure needed to sterilize grain. you can maybe get away with a small pasteurization job but not for sterilizing anything

Thanks but I'm not asking about sterilizing the grain, I'm aware and have a PC. I'm asking about PREPARING the grain. Instead of having to soak/boil etc. Can the IP be used to do that part quickly?

I'm a pretty big cook and use the IP, for example, to quickly cook dried black beans without soaking/boiling.

I'm wondering if the same can be done for, say, Rye or Grass Seed.

I tried it and ended up with a mess and gave up after one try.

Although i have successfully used the instant pot "sterilizing grains" many times with zero contams (4 x 500ml masons at a time takes a while lol), I am not suggesting it. Perhaps im just lucky, i dunno. Anyway, i dont use it anymore for that.

I understand your question is geared to the actual pre-sterilization  prep of the grains or the "cook". Although I havent tried it, it make sense to me. I'm not sure of the TEK, but ill keep this post tagged for more info

Thanks! I might give it a try and report back if I am able to dial it in. I'm a newbie at mycology though so will probably stick to the well known methods for now.

I use one all the time.

I do 2hours for grain though instead of 90min.

Works just fine. I've had maybe a 90% success rate with popcorn, oat, brown rice, wbs and rye grass seed (have not used rye berries)

Sometimes I'll let em cool down to room temp after the 2 hours and if I feel like I over hydrated I just put the jars in the oven as is at 165° for like an hour and shake em every 20min but that's just to help with clumping because I rarely use gyspum.

Honestly I've read a lot of mixed reviews here on shoomery but most all other mushroom cultivation sites I've been too say they work just fine.
So although I was initially hesitant to get one I ended up deciding to save a few bucks and get the largest one I could find and it works just fine no problems.

Only drawback I would say is that I can only for 4qt jars and they timing needs to be extended.
From what I've gathered they only max out at 11psi but the instructions state that the "meat" setting is more like 13.5psi so there's really no reason they won't work and anyone saying they don't is probably speaking out of their ass.
I will post pics of the unit and jars in a variety of stages of colonizing if you would like.
Happy shroomin

I feel like an idiot because I just noticed one of your replies specifying your question.

Cover grain 2inch above the grain line with water.
45min on its highest pc setting and drain excess water and your golden.

Grass seed is even easier. Just use 300ml RGS and 150ml of water per qt jar (don't use pint jars for that recipe because there isn't enough room for air or to be shaken easy)

Let it sit for 2hours shaken the jars to disperse the water and after it was set for 2hours the seeds are hydrated then just pc for 2hours (I've done 1hr45min but a little extra provides a cusion for success)

I actually prefer grass seed over all the other methods I've done. Even the spore inoculated jars look wonderful! Fast colonized as well. (Try using coffee in place of water for a boost in nitrogen)

Thank you! That is really helpful! Do you do quick release or just let the IP come down on its own?

don't quick release. Just let it go on its owm. When you quick release you restructure air pockets that can introduce contamination easily.

When I first got it I did that a few times not knowing and while I didn't get contam it def made things come out clumpier (not sure why ...just my observation)

Interesting - grass seed? Thats a new one to me...

Tripglass420, the in bottle tek sounds appealing.

OP were you thinking more on the bulk grain cook method and then jarring afterwards? This is what i was assuming, but this of course is just a guess. I think any tek related info, especially with oats, i am interested

Yup! I wanted to bulk prepare the grains first, then load them into the jars for PC in a regular pressure cooker (not instant pot).

I really just hate sitting around and watching things boil when the IP should be able to dial in a consistent cook for the grains every time.
