Pressure cooker regular rocking, but no steam???
    #26895509 - 08/23/20 02:18 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So I recently replace the pressure gauge and seal on my presto pressure cooker after it would not pressurize. Now I get it to pressurize to 15psi it’s slowly rocking, but there is no steam coming out. My other pressure cooker at 15psi is hissing and releasing steam. Really don’t want to do a bunch of grain and then realize that it wasn’t done correctly. Anyone else have this problem??? Thanks

Lol, yes there is water. I hear it inside the pressure cooker, also it was spitting water through the top hole before I put the regulator on. It’s spitting out a little steam, but my other pressure cooker is really noticeable. Maybe the gauge itself is slightly off?

There’s not supposed to be a bunch of steam coming out.  A little comes out through the rocker.

None comes out through mine because I put 3 quarters on the rocker.

Little steam just means little water loss, not no sterilization.

You’re good - sounds like you fixed the issue 👍

Any way you can measure temperature of the outside of the pot? You should see approximately 250 F. I use a temp gun to check when I PC just as an extra precaution. If you have a shiny silver PC, then you will need some black electrical tape or something else to get a good reading.

As others have mentioned, you can add weight to the top, but that's a very dangerous game and I wouldn't recommend it. The PC is designed for a certain pressure, and adding weight increases that pressure. Yeah, there's some safety margin in the design, but I wouldn't trust it.

I feel like I explain this at least once a week to somebody

Steam is invisible. Steam is gaseous water. What you see coming from the stopcock
during venting is water vapor, just like in your shower. Your shower isnt 212f, yet it still produces water vapor.

This is because water vapor can be produced under a multitude of circumstances and atmospheric conditions,
whereas steam is only produced by boiling water or possibly sublimation under the correct conditions.

If water is boiling inside your cooker, steam is being produced. Vent properly
and you'll be fine

Ahh that makes sense. The new seal i put on is really tight, so that probably explains why not much water is escaping. From doing a bit more research the weight is 15 pounds so, as long as it’s rocking there should be at least 15psi inside. Thanks for the help people!
