First Grow - Possible Contamination

Hi All,
This is my first post after reading the forum for months now. I'm just after growing my first batch and have encountered this issue for the second time and after reading multiple similar but just off questions I was hoping for some advice.
I have used the PF Tek and had 4 cakes fruiting in a SGFC. So far I have harvested two of my cakes after their first flush, roughly 5-6 days apart.
I noticed with the first cake after I dunked it and put it back in the SGFC that there was this really strange foot like smell occurring in the SGFC and a few either fruit flies or gnats flying around. I narrowed it down to just the cake I had put back in after dunking. I began researching and the safest course of action I learned was that it could be contaminated and a risk to my other cakes. So I binned it, the flies instantly went away to find some fruit and I didn't see them again.
Until today, last night I harvested my second cake. I left it dunked for 16 hours or so. It Looked perfectly fine and I put it back in the chamber. I just went to mist it and I saw another fly and have noticed that smell coming starting again. I tried to be extra cautious in case it was the water that caused the possible contamination last time so I made sure the water for the dunk was as sterile as I could manage on short notice by boiling it for 5 minutes and then made sure it was covered at all times while cooling and then once at a safe temperature I put in the cake and then covered it back over.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Or any advice, I have researched and found a solution to the fly problem, but it does not solved why my cakes are going all funny smelling and what I am doing wrong that is causing this.

So after seeing advice on a few other questions, I can see that other people encountered strange smells after dunks, some people recommend rinsing the cake to remove bacteria before and after a dunk.
So I have just rinsed my cake and am applying a new layer of verm to it as the previous was quite light as my verm is coarse. Right after the rinse i could smell that nice mushroom smell. Hopefully the rinse does the trick but i will update here to let people know how i got on.
One issue I see on this site is after people get their answers few come back to let you know if it worked or not.

So after a couple of days the smell has mostly gone away, its not as mushroomy anymore though, but it is getting better day by day.
After reading other threads on the topic, I made sure to rinse my cakes before dunking and dunk for under 12 hours and then rinse again. This gives the bacteria causing the smell less of a chance to grow.
Now all seems well.
