Fruiting chamber
    #26894950 - 08/23/20 08:17 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I usually fruit with the dub tub set-up.  The first flush is pretty good (:  But after that things go downhill quickly....I think humidity and air flow may be too low.  I know people here make some amazing contraptions to optimize these conditions, but I'm not good at building stuff.

Is there something I can buy that would create optimal humidity and airflow?

I came across these two things:

https://www.amazon.com/EarlyGrow-93807-Propagator-Height-Extenders/dp/B07GRRDXSV/ref=asc_df_B07GRRDXSV/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=242120314056&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10712231713719742108&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008564&hvtargid=pla-523322411883&psc=1

https://www.etsy.com/listing/843921813/heated-and-humidity-controlled-mushroom?ref=shop_home_active_2&crt=1

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Is there something else that would help me improve fruiting conditions?

If your fruiting chamber isn't working the best solution almost always is make it more simple and spend less money.

Have you tried monotubs?

The kind of fruiting chamber doesn`t matter imo.
You have to dial in to your environment.

Work with polyfill? - Loosen it.
Work unmodified? - Flip the lid.
Low humidity? - Rehydrate your grains before spawning.

Sometimes it`s hard to dial in, but once you have it on spot,
you may grow in every kind of fruiting chamber.

Buying that isn't going to fix whatever problems your having. Try making a post with everything that's not working for you and see what people suggest. Absolutely no TC here would ever suggest you buy that thing to fix any problems.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ aint that the fuckin truth man

i think a lot of us have learned that the hard way cuz i know i did when i first started i tried to make all kinds of stupid shit and wasted all kinds of time and money. its cuz your mind tricks u into thinking its more complex than it really is. all it did was make me spend more time fucking with shit for less mushrooms in amount, looks and even potency. unless your growing pans or some other exotics there really is no need at all for anything other than a properly built monotub. it dont matter if its modded or unmodded/unbodded  i and many others have had equal success in both. pastys ez dial has actually became my go to for mono design the last few times i grew cubes.

so do yourself a huge favor from the get go and just go with a monotubπŸ‘πŸ˜ƒ

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone!  Yes, what you all say make sense.

Right now I prioritize a clean space (top shelf of closet with lights on) for dub tub fruiting conditions.

But I think I could have better luck moving them into the garage - which can get wet.  That would allow me to get a humidifier and fan.  I could position the humidifier next to the dub tub and the fan on the other side of that...so it's blowing humid air across the colonized substrate.

And of course I'm interested in moving to a mono tub.  Any specific tek I should refer to for that?  In terms of substrates I have only used BRF cakes into coir/verm shoeboxes.

Thanks again!

Wow!  I think I have been hesitant to switch to this....because all my cakes would go into a single mono tub.  But with the shoeboxes, one would still has the chance to fruit if the other doesn't.

Years ago, I made a SGFC with a clear tote - about the same size at the one in Pastywhyte's tek.

It has tons of holes drilled in it though (including holes on the base).  You think I could seal those holes up with clear packaging tape and repurpose the tote as a monotubs?  Looks like a black plastic liner is used at the base anyways.

Excited to try this!  So a garage isn't too dirty!?  Is the humidifier + fan idea a good one?  I have seen pics of others doing that.  Just not sure if it would be needed in garage setting.

Once your spawn is colonized it doesn’t really matter how dirty things are.

Instead of having a fan and humidifier I would just use neither. I run unmodded tubs, shoeboxes and underbeds which are just massive shoeboxes, in pretty harsh conditions and they work great.

Just snap the lid on or dub them and leave it alone is a solid strategy.

also unless u got a perfectly climate controlled garage with heating and ac i wouldnt be putting a grow in a hot ass dirty ass garage next to the weedwhacker and lawn mower thats without a doubt covered in all kinds of trich and other mold spores lol. and again u dont need a humidifier or anything else of the sort for growing cubes.

also while brf cakes will work to aome extent they are not near as effective and are not as consitantly reliable as a grain spawn would be. you really should take the step and go to a grain spawn instead of  using brf cakes. also use agar to knock up your grains with. that alone will greatly increase your chances of a succsessful grow

How do things go downhill? If you let us know your methods and what's happening we can probably help you figure out what's going wrong.

Skip air pumps, humidifers, etc etc. They just add complexity to something that's meant to be simple.

I agree. Learning to prep grain and monotubs is just as eazy to learn as the pftek method. I've never done brf cakes, ever.

if conditions are right, I have seen folks get very healthy 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes even fourth flushes from dub tubs.

I get good first flush and very lackluster second flush.  No contamination.  But environmental conditions are not optimal.  My best guess is that humidity and also possibly air flow are too low.  That's why I was thinking of adding fan (set up at a distance) and humidifier (closer to the shoebox).

Still thinking of doing colonization indoors.  Then moving it to garage for fruiting.  The garage is quite clean - no lawn mower or anything like that.  Flies could be an issue though.  Could surround it with a mosquito net.

I have used grain spawn (millet, in this case) for other species of mushrooms and had so much contamination.  So I've been hesitate to try it for cubes.  Can you send me a link to the agar and grain spawn protocols?  I can certainly give it a try.

Can I use my old SGFC as a mono tub?  It has too many holes currently, but packaging tape could cover up a proportion of them.

no just buy an 8$ tote or something at wally world. as for the grain and agar prep if u search for roger rabbits lets grow mushrooms videos it will have so much useful info on there that u can use forever. i personally suggest going to the site and downloading fhem for the 15$ cuz everyone whos interested in or just starting in cultivation should watch. hell  il still pop the dvds in once in a while just for the pure enjoyment. i dont have links just google "roger rabbits lets grow mushrooms videos" or if you dont wanna download and own them you can find snip clips of a few of the segments on youtube. as for agar i just use a mea premix that il add water to and pc then pour. but there is a bunch of different agar teks on here id start by using the search engine in the upper right hand corner and search agar teks and find one that you think best suits your comfort level. there is pour and no pour so ur gnna have to just do some reading is all but agar is the best tool you can have in your box man. it will allow you to start with a clean culture. il bet the bank that your grajns contammed cuz u shot dirty ass spores into them. spores are dirty  for the most part and syringes are the worst prints are by far the way to go especially with agar. syringes r fine on agar too its just a tad messy sometimes and hard to get just 1 drop out at times and once you put a syringe on agar and you see all the bacteria ul know why you should use agar. cuz ul see shit like this

now if u have to use a spore syringe without agar then brf cakes are better for injecting spores into.

just found this picture that someone else posted years ago.

I could set something like this up in un-used shower.  cool mist humidifier (the air in the house is VERY dry - like 40% RH) connected to silicone tubing that goes into large plastic container that has the colonized substrate at base.

That adds the air flow and humidity needed for strong subsequent flushes.  Right!?

prefer words to facial expressions.  not sure why humidity and airflow is not desired.  please explain.

If you want to buy all that stuff it's up to you.
You don't need it for airflow and humidity,
that's all dialed in within a tub.
Look for pictures or grow logs from cultivators,
noone uses such a setup.
But in the end you can do what you want
