tequila 2

so last night my roommate and i polished off a bottle of CENTENARIO, Anejo, and drunkenly decided to go to the gas station nearby to buy some more tequila to keep the party going. it is a gas station so the liquor options are limited. my roomy grabbed a bottle of PATRON tequila and i was excited to taste it because it had been a few years since i drank any PATRON.
conclusion: PATRON tequila is gross and should not be $50 a bottle. the CENTENARIO is $30 and is the superior tequila.

I don't really care for tequila and would never buy it myself but I got a friend hispanic homie who is huge on tequila, he's quite well off and always has a collection of very pricey tequilas.
My bro-in-law makes homemade micheladas and puts beer AND tequila in them and they are the shit

You ever had a bloody mary before? Basically a bloody mary but with beer. It's not for everyone but if one likes bloody marys or even V8s then odds are they'd like a michelada. Well assuming they like beer.
The first time I ever had one was the Bud Light ones and that was awful. And I thought that's what micheladas were. So I thought they were trash for the longest. But then my brother-in-law made me a homemade one and it was amazing. Now I'm hooked.
If you don't like the clamato then you can replace that with regular bloody mary mix.
- bloody mary mix and/or clamato - mexican beer (I prefer Sol) - few dashes of maggi soy sauce (yep) - few dashes of worcestershire sauce - mexican tajin seasoning - lime - couple spoons of pickle juice - mexican hot sauce like valentina - shot of tequila (optional)

Oh yeah he's right, the homemade ones are soooooo different. And worlds better. My bro-in-law kept telling me this too but I didn't really listen until one time we were getting drunk at his place and he made one.
The Sol canned one here below isn't bad -- it's a higher quality canned one but yes, for the most part, the canned ones are pretty terrible. ESPECIALLY the budweiser or bud light ones. Yuck. They're awful. First one I had I think I took like 2 sips and threw it away.

Get some Pulque in your system and you'll never drink agave nectar any other way.

Are you comparing an Anejo to a Blanco? Their both tequila but might as well be different liquors entirely. It's similar to saying you really enjoy a Macallan, but don't like Laphroaig. They're both scotches but the difference between a Highland/Speyside and Islay not to mention the production process makes them very different drinks.

no im not comparing anejo to blanco. i know anejo is top choice followed by reposado. blanco being the lowest rung on the tequila ladder.
i thought PATRON blanco would have tasted better rhan it did since it is expensive and quite reputable. i didnt expect it to taste better than the anejo.
i would argue that PATRON blanco is not worthy of its price tag.

Ok just making sure, and I agree Patron gets by on marketing and brand recognition, most tequila drinkers I don't even think know of Reposado, or Anejo and how much better than they are compared to any Blanco.

i would try a homemade one, for sure. the only thing that keeps me hesitant is the clammy smell and taste lol. that recipe you shared does sound tasty. im a little weary of the pickle juice. i want to like pickles.... i really do... but i just cant!

Fixed, its the Mexican Bloody Mary, good way to start of a day session, maybe some mimosa's too to keep it classy AF.

Yeah for that price, it should stand alone as a drink, not be for making margaritas.

My buddy Pancho first introduced me to Centenario about 8 years ago. It's good stuff! I prefer it to Patron. And the label is super cool.

Yup that's the stuff. You can buy it at most dive bars in Tijuana and Tecate. It's easy to home brew too if your not Mexico adjacent.

In grad school my boss was Guatemalan, but a lot of the post docs/grad students were Mexican. For celebration of a students graduation one of the Mexican grads brought a bottle of this in. Was pretty good, but the Agave flavor was very strong to me, which is a bit off a turn off, and why I don't generally drink tequila's despite being familiar with them.

No salt or lime, yes it's delish. Sometimes though I'll go with the orange and worm salt with mezcal but usually not.
Patron is way overpriced. Espolon, Cazadores, Milagro, hell even Hornitos and Cuervo Tradicional are all as good or better and cheaper. There are countless tequilas at a similar price range that are better; Casa Noble, Casamigos, Don Julio, Avion, Milagro Reserve, Fortaleza, El Tesoro, so on and so forth. Almost anything that costs as much as Patron is going to be better than Patron.
That said some of their higher end stuff is really fucking good. The Roca Patron line is solid. Gran Patron stuff is REALLY tasty but still probably overpriced. Gran Patron Burdeos is probably the best tequila I've ever had, but it also costs $500 a bottle. When you get up to like $200/bottle in tequila there's a lot of diminishing returns in my limited experience.
