Contamination confusion, help a brotha out
    #26891598 - 08/21/20 11:47 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

So here are some master jars I nocced a month ago with agar.
To me, they visually look fine, and this is how most of my spawn has looked for the past couple months. But somehow, I keep getting tubs that colonize fast, and then contam, or dont colonize nearly at all and then contam.
Statistically my shoeboxes contam less than my 54q grows, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.
My question is- What kind of contamination am I getting? Bacterial? How can I prevent/recognize it early on?
Since it isn't visual in the spawn I don't know its contaminated until I G2G, spawn them, and wait for growth in the sub which just is a lot of resources wasted for nothing.

Thank you!

You may do the last shake, as like you want to spawn them.
Let them sit then for about 2 days more.
If they don't recover, they may be bacterial.

Would that be fine to do as well before I G2G? I don't see why it wouldn't be but just asking in case.

Seems like pictures of the tubs could be useful?

It's not about the tubs here.
If the tub gets contam while colonizing,
it's spawn.
Substrate is coir/verm?
Overthink your sterile techniques,
perhaps there's something off.

Yeah, that's good for G2G.

The sub is 100% coir, I shook a couple jars and I'm going to see if they start bouncing back before I G2G them. It might be the sterile technique, I'll take more precautions next round. The spawn sometimes smells sweet, which I know is indicative of bacterial contamination but even using those jars of spawn give me fine grows sometimes, so I'm really just at a loss for the root of error.

If it's straight sweet smell, it's for sure bacterial.
Sometimes fresh mycelium has a slightly sweet on top of
the earthy mushroom smell, and can be mistaken for contam sometimes.

Would bacterial contaminated spawn still smell sweet after it has been shaken? I find that it can smell kind of sweet before I shake then after I shake it just smells earthy.

Yes, after a shake you mostly only smell mushroom.
But if it won`t recover quick after the shake, it may be bacterial,
that`s a better indicator as relying just on smell.
