I know this thread is a couple months old, but I just want to say that this is a common and frustrating misconception.
This is a more succinct and articulate explanation than I would be able to write up this morning:
"SAMHSA defines trauma as "an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual's functioning and physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being.
Events and circumstances may include the actual or extreme threat of physical or psychological harm or the withholding of material or relational resources essential to healthy development. These events and circumstances may occur as a single occurrence or repeatedly over time.
The individual's experience of these events or circumstances helps to determine whether it is a traumatic event. How the individual labels, assigns meaning to, and is disrupted physically and psychologically by an event will determine whether or not it is experienced as traumatic.
The long-lasting adverse effects on an individual are the result of the individual's experience of the event or circumstance. These adverse effects may occur immediately or over time. In some situations, the individual may not recognize the connection between the effects and the events. Examples of adverse effects include an individual's inability to cope with the normal stresses and strains of daily living; to trust and benefit from relationships; and to manage emotions, memory, attention, thinking, and behavior.
In short, trauma is the sum of the event, the experience, and the effect."
What is traumatic to one person may not even affect another. Individuals experience and process things differently. PTSD is not exclusive to combat veterans and adverse effects from traumatic experiences are much, much more common than you may think.
I'm sorry that you had bad experiences with people who are supposed to be professionals. I hate to hear it. I also see a lot of misinformation and some downright wrong and potentially damaging statements in this thread. I don't know if OP is still around on this forum, but if you are, I would say that everything Rhizomorph said is on point, and I would add that finding a therapist who specializes in substance use disorders would likely be much more fruitful for you.
I know I'm just some rando on a weird internet forum, but feel free to DM me if you want to talk to anyone about anything, or if you need a little advice.

Although psychedelic research is novel, there are some interesting theories and lines of research out there.
The entropic brain theory is an interesting one that may conceptualize why we see therapeutic effects induced by psychedelics: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2014.00020/full
Just some food for thought

upshurg Damn dude I feel you. I appreciate everyones contributions to this thread there is some really good advise and sentiment here.
With covid and things being online you could find a psychedelic integration group anywhere in the country here are a few resources near me that I know about (I can't vouch for them, I have not tried them but it could be good to look into)
