meditations on personal responsibility

If you could reverse the direction of time, it might be useful to assign blame. Because blame is all about the past. Yet time moves only forward. And no matter how precisely you analyze and reconstruct the past, you won't be able to change what has already happened.
When you truly desire to move forward, assigning blame won't do it. The way to move positively ahead is to take responsibility.
The situation in which you find yourself is yours, no matter how it came to be, no matter who may be to blame. Life moves forward, so let your thinking and your actions be focused in the same positive, productive direction.
From this point on, your best strategy is to embrace responsibility. After all, the person with the most vested interest in your future is you.
Take responsibility, and you put yourself firmly in control.

OK, at a stoplight on your way home from work you get car-jacked by a gang and they pummel you into unconsiousness. You never get your car back and you lose thousands when the insurance company gives you a fraction of its worth. How is accepting responsibility for the thugs behaviour going to make you a better person?

Accepting that it has happened to you and instead being angry about your material and physical loss through what the thugs have done, meditating on the anger and pain, and letting it go.
-------------------- Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

What Jenny said.
The Yaqui and Toltec shamen both place a great importance on accepting what has happened, accepting your role in the events of your life, and allowing your attachment to move past the event and thus out of your plane. Only once you move beyond your attachment to an event/person/happening can you truly move forward, unhindered and unfettered.
I think that's what he was getting at. I could be wrong, tho.

I hear what you and Jenny are saying, but Zen-like acceptance of a situation "as it is" is not the same as taking responsibility for everything that befalls you.
Responsibility is saying that you are involved in the causation of an event. The car-jack victim did not "cause" the thugs to do their deed.

You always have partial responsibility for everything that happens to you. There are no victims.

Was he choosing to stay at his house?
what do you mean "choosing"?
were all the kids who lived in nagasaki "choosing" to remain in their city?
your idea has no weight, choice is irrelevent in such situations.

the "present" as we know it has been already chosen long ago, our karma from previous manifestations has already chosen our present or destiny. existence is just a movie all that you can do is witness nothing other than that will do anything of any significance. live as a whole, not as a fraction.
if someone steals your car they tie a string of karmic bond to physical existence. When you die all your possesions fade away. in death there is no taken your body just your essence.
your spirit exists with no memory, burning for endless years until returning to its source, become one thing, one thing for all.
earth is basically based on judgement. all its laws perceived from one angle.

Prove it. I think that idea is a copout. A rationalization that people convince themselves of so that they can cope with the shitty aspects of life. I used to believe this, but realized it is completely unfounded. It makes much more sense to just accept that shit happens and there isn't always a rationale.

Wait a tic....didn't you just say that our 'karma' determines our present situations. Then how can you think that all we can do is witness existence? Didn't our actions affect our 'destiny' to begin with? Is there a statute of limitations on it or something?

Which laws? That's a soul crushing way to view the world.

agreed. those words are by Ralph Marston. It would seem that the flip side of taking responsibility for your own actions would be to give credit for the work of others, no?
