4’x2’ screen built for free, who needs a colander.

I’ve been buying supplies after supplies getting ready to do some big grows and even with a decent size colander it was just taking too much time to dry the grain. I watched a video on YouTube of someone using like a window screen and it gave me an idea. While shopping at Home Depot I was looking at wood to build my own screen and the gentleman said “if you’re looking for cheap wood grab it from this pile... it’s free.” Ok I’m sold. They had pieces they looked like they were from scrap cuts and for straps on pallets. 4 feet long and 2 feet long. Snagged enough to build a frame and walked out cautiously hoping someone wouldn’t say I was stealing. I had some aluminum screen laying around the house, 3” wood screws from previous projects. Built the bottom part, used a staple gun to attach the screen material; then added a second layer frame to secure it all. It can hold a good deal of grain, more air reaches it, dries quicker. I went back to a few Home Depot’s and grabbed enough wood to build two more and picked up some more screening for $16 (still have plenty of screws leftover). If interested I can make a tek when I build my next one.

Cool post, I was just thinking of doing something similar. Might have to make a quick run to home depot after reading this. Any tips or advice you learned after making the first one that you would do different the next time around?

Absolutely, I am going to be making quite a few of these, actually putting one together right now and I have learned a lot from the first one. You really don't need high-quality wood, you can even use warped wood in the 70% section. The biggest thing to consider is you need to be able to carry it around and the wood has to be thick enough to hold the weight of the structure and the grain. Both Home Depot and Lowe's has a section where they have free scrap wood, just ask an associate in the lumber area and they can show you where it is. Also they have defective wood that is 70% off. The first screen I made with 2x4 and I'll be honest I wish I used 2x3 wood instead. The scrap wood I got this time around was 2x3 and it will make it a lot easier. Make sure it doesn't have any major cracks and if they have grooves in them you can work around it. If you want I can make a write up for you on how I did it. The screws you need will be 3" max unless you get specialty screws and it's going to cost you. I am using 2.5" wood screws I have layng around to build this next one. The wood is 3" thick so what I learned was to drill a pilot hole with a 1/8 bit then I grabbed a forstner set and used the 3/8 set to drill a 1/2-3/4 hole (kind of like a countersink) so the screws will sufficiently connect. You want to do two screws on each end, if it is loose, do one diagonally on each othside corner and it will be rock solid. Once you get the base structure complete next lay out your screen, I prefer aluminum because it's what I have but the grain can get hot and easy to clean. A 36" x 84" roll is like $8. I used 3/4 staples to attach the screen and I used a lot of staples to make it really tight. Then I build the second layer of wood on the existing structure to help secure the screen even further but also give you an area where you can move the grain around to dry it out without spilling. With the free wood, a few bucks for screws and heck you may be able to find some free screen on craigslist it's super cheap large filter. The biggest take away was boring out the holes so the screws would go in farther to the other piece of wood. Forstner basic set isn't very expensive and comes in handy with making holes in lids.

Haha It's great and everything, but why spend time building something when you can just buy a large mesh tray like this one??
From Home Depot nonetheless! It holds a lot of grain and with high sides, you can just tilt it in a circular motion rolling the grain around from corner to corner giving you excellent evaporation! It's honestly probably my favorite cultivation tool!

I like the idea of the mesh screen if I am putting together larger batches of grain. I can reduce my drying time somewhat by increasing the surface area of the drying space. When this hobby becomes an obsession, efficiency increases equals more free time to do other stuff (like enjoy the fruits of my labor).

Thanks for the great info. I definitely bookmarked this page to look back at. I plan to see what I can make happen and will update. Last time I was rushing my drying time I used tub lids covered in aluminum foil! Huge pain in the ass and recurring material cost that is unneccessary.

Weeeeeell, I honestly didn't find it lol. But my whole thing is surface area, you can fit a lot of grain in there but all the wet grain will require constant tossing and turning, stirring to dry it out. With the screen, I just make a very thin layer and it dries super quick. PLUS this was free, I am a frugal bastard so I will do whatever it takes to save money especially when I've invested about $600+ in growing again lol. Also, I am on a 6-week vacation, I'm bored out of my mind I needed something to do. I am sure someone out there would be interested in this and have the materials or desire to own something like this. My 3'x4' I'll be able to dry 20 jars worth of grain and that will be one of 3 screens with a total cost of less than $20. How much was that one you bought at Home Depot?

I get the whole surface area thing, but honestly "rolling" the grain around in this tray like I do brings the bottom kernels up to the top and vice versa, and my grain is ready to be jarred in less than 5 minutes from initial dump into the tray. I fucking love it. I do 10 jars worth at a time, because that's what my PC holds, and I only have one PC, but you could certainly fit more. And I dont remember exactly how much it cost me, but I'm thinking it was less than CAD$20. But dont get me wrong though, I also love tinkering and building shit, and saving money, so all the power to you for doing so. Many ways to skin a cat! (Although I'm not sure why you ever would...) Keep on rocking and doing you!

Totally bursted my bubble, I knew they existed but haven't seen many used. I like to build shit so I am having fun with it. Plus some may be put off by it because it may require too much effort but a simple one with free stuff is really easy to do lol.

I think it's mostly because I like to build shit lol. Right now I have 3 65k BTU burners, AA no7 915, an older AA 925, and I pre-ordered a 930, I plan to do some serious jars lol. I'm super frugal, I save money so I can enjoy hobbies like this. I am a Walmart manager, 60k a year so I'm not rich by any means I am just smart with my money so that when a hobby comes along that I get obsessed with I can do it lmao.

That Mesh bucket it cool.
I started using either an old terrarium with a screen lid for small batches, or this huge 5 square foot screen made to go over windows as a sun shade.
I gave up on evenly drying the grain, I’ve got it down now where I know when the top layer on the pile is dry I can mix the whole thing up and it’s perfect.

But half the fun is building stuff! I'm going to start on my grow room next week! You would be amazed at the lumber they have for 70% at Home Depot and Lowe's. I'm going to make workbenches, shelving, jar/agar closet supplied with HEPA filtered air, flow hood build into one of the benches, and an entire wall of shelves that will fit Bod's 54g Sterilite unmodified mono tubs. Ok, so I am on disability leave for 6 weeks or longer. I NEED to keep myself occupied lol.
